already seeing a big difference in his sensitivity to light🙏

alright keyboard warriors! let’s remember that horse skin is different than humans.

no, it doesn’t burn worse. black absorbs uv, but doesn’t trap heat dangerously in skin this thin.

yes, dark pigment reduces uv penetration. that’s photobiology 101, not opinion.

no, it’s not replacing melanin. it mimics its function in high-risk pink skin.

yes, pink skin has a higher rate of squamous cell carcinoma, especially around the eyes.

no, this doesn’t replace fly masks or shade. it’s one more layer of defense

no, it doesn’t block all uv, but it absorbs enough to help.

human skin is thicker and naturally better at handling uv — horse skin, especially pink areas, is thinner, more exposed, and way more vulnerable to damage. that’s why this matters, even IF it only helps by 1%, that is significant in the long run.

The pups put in some serious miles this time of year! I use Tractive smart collars to track their activity and see where they are with live GPS in case they wander too far, so whether we’re out riding or just doing chores, I have peace of mind❤️

i’ve started feeling the shift into winter and, without fail, it’s bringing up a lot.

for the first time in about 10 years, i’m not moving this fall. instead, i’ve spent it on a long list of projects, refining my herd, setting more goals, and reframing my thinking in many ways.

every morning I’ve been writing down the things i’m grateful for at this point in my life. a bustling workload, hot water, a working furnace, the opportunity to both deepen my knowledge and skills, and to help teach a younger generation. the list grows and grows.

but i’ve found myself battling my own thoughts through a lot of those as well, struggling to find my place in agriculture.

how do i know when to reign back all these goals i have for myself, and feel satisfied with where i’m at in this moment? how do i handle feeling turned away by my community, without my instinct chanting “just run” because that’s what has become “safe” in my mind over the years? how do i unlearn rejection feeling equivalent to failure? why do i allow other people to carry so much weight in how i think of myself? and how do i ease my nervous system enough to feel truly rested?

i am learning a lot. some of it has brought up wounds i didn’t even know needed healing. its been a long time since ive had roots, and usually every fall i am scrambling to find a new home, starting over in many ways.

i think a lot of us have been learning to navigate big shifts this year, both in our goals and friendships. it can be intimidating.

this will be my second winter having my own land, and i feel much more prepared this year after many lessons of trial and error. i try to rewrite these roadblocks or jabs to a wound as a valuable lesson, or recently, an opportunity to heal things i’ve spent a lot of time running from.

i wanted to share how I’m feeling because i feel like i’ve fallen a little quiet. which is ok! but after such a bustling spring/summer/fall, with many wins and new life shown, i have to stay true to myself and share some of these thoughts of self-doubt as well. i know many of us have them, especially this time of year, and it’s too easy to feel alone in that.

i hope that you know you’re not🖤

Evening chores wind down with a little help from @openfarmpet Epic Blend Grass Fed Beef and Bone Broth recipes— I feed fresh food in the mornings and rotate in their kibble at night to keep things easy without sacrificing nutrition. just the best kind of “farewell to summer” trip a gal could imagine this year. I am so incredibly grateful to have experienced the buffalo roundup first hand & learn about how well their herd is managed!

definitely had me missing Lucy. this was the closest i’ve been to bison since she passed, and although it brought up emotions, i feel even more thankful for all of the things she taught me about her kind.

south dakota in general has really blown me away. the scenery, green grass, fall foliage, art, food, coffee and the PEOPLE above all else. this is such an underrated state.

i’m finishing up this trip feeling really inspired (and ready to plan my next trip back)
