Green Day played it safe in their Super Bowl pre-game show on Sunday, skipping references to the “MAGA agenda” in the second verse of their hit song “American Idiot.”

The band had an f-bomb bleeped out in the first verse (the mics were muted in the stadium, too) but otherwise kept things clean.

It was a stark departure from their appearance at a private pre-Super Bowl party on Friday night, when frontman Billie Joe Armstrong called out ICE agents in their set, telling them to quit their “sh*tty ass jobs.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson's decision to keep his chamber on recess during the government shutdown is stalling a long-awaited vote on releasing the Jeffrey Epstein files.

WHY IT MATTERS: The delay of Rep. Thomas Massie's discharge petition has fueled frustration among Democrats, and even some Republicans, who argue Johnson is keeping lawmakers out of town to avoid the politically charged vote.

But Johnson called claims that he's keeping the House out to avoid the vote "totally absurd."

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: "Why are we in recess? Because the day we go back into session, I have 218 votes for the discharge petition to force a vote on releasing the Epstein files," Massie posted on X on Sunday (10/5).

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of the four GOP signatories on the petition, told Axios in a statement Monday (10/6): "The House has so much work to do, why aren't we coming back in session?"

"Not being in session certainly does avoid the Epstein discharge petition, which I've never understood why it's anything to hide. Aren't we all against convicted pedophiles and anyone who enables them?"

At an Axios News Shapers event Wednesday, Sen. Thom Tillis said that the Trump administration should “release the damn” Jeffrey Epstein files as the best way to put the whole issue in the rearview.

WHY IT MATTERS: The Justice Department’s handling of evidence in the case driven the most enduring conflict between Trump and his MAGA base of this term — and the fallout has has roiled Congress.

“It makes no sense to me,” Tillis told Axios’ Stef Kight at an Axios News Shapers event Wednesday, referring to the administration’s refusal to share the files.

“Either it’s a nothing burger ... or it’s something really disturbing, and that’s actually even a more compelling reason to release it,” he said.

Jack Schlossberg, a writer and grandson of President John F. Kennedy, said he is forming an exploratory committee to run for Congress in New York.

WHY IT MATTERS: Schlossberg is a high-profile figure in the Democratic Party who would likely bring additional attention to what is already expected to be a hotly contested race.

The seat, New York's 12th congressional district, became open this week after Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) said he will not run for an 18th term.
In addition to Schlossberg, non-profit CEO Liam Elkind and state Assemblyman Micah Lasher are running for the seat.

Several others, including former Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), state Assemblymen Alex Bores and Tony Simone, city Councilman Erik Bottcher and actress and former gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon are seen as potential candidates.

DRIVING THE NEWS: Schlossberg said in a post on X, "Hey guys ? have formed an exploratory committee."

Trump explicitly ran as the anti-war candidate. The White House argues he still is — that he always exhausts diplomacy before acting, and that projecting overwhelming force is itself a path to lasting peace, Axios' Zachary Basu reports.

The death of U.S. service members in Trump's Iran strikes is putting that argument to its most brutal test.

Christian nationalism is now deeply entrenched inside today's Republican Party, according to a sweeping 50-state survey by the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute.

WHY IT MATTERS: The once-fringe ideology holds that the U.S. was founded as a Christian nation and should be governed according to strict Christian values, even as the country becomes less religious and more racially diverse, @russncontreras reports.

The divide reflects a broader clash over whether America's future is pluralistic or rooted in a singular religious-national identity.

BY THE NUMBERS: 56% of all Republicans are Christian nationalism "adherents" or "sympathizers," the survey said.

Meanwhile, only 25% of independents and just 17% of Democrats are "adherents" or "sympathizers," according to the survey.

Trump's economic polling numbers are about the worst they've ever been, and almost on par with the worst of the Biden presidency.

Whatever growth the administration says is coming from its trade and industrial policy, nothing is more vivid to households than what they pay to feed themselves.

DRIVING THE NEWS: The food-at-home component of the Consumer Price Index rose 0.6% in August from July, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Thursday (9/11).

This was the biggest month-over-month increase since August 2022, the tail end of a year of huge monthly increases in grocery prices.

Three national surveys point to the same alarming trend for a president who's done everything in his power to erase his predecessor's legacy, Axios' Zachary Basu reports.

Harvard CAPS/Harris (Jan. 28–29): Mark Penn's polling firm found that 51% of registered voters say Trump is doing a worse job than Biden, compared with 49% who say he's doing better.

Rasmussen Reports (Feb. 2–4): The Trump-friendly pollster is fending off MAGA criticism after finding that 48% of likely voters say Biden did a better job as president, compared with 40% who chose Trump. Another 8% said the two presidents have performed "about the same."
