ANDY BURNHAM OPENS THE BADGER, THE NQ’S NEWEST (BUT OLDEST LOOKING) PUB

From the crew behind The Crown & Kettle and The Rat & Pigeon comes The Badger, a brand new pub for the Northern Quarter.

Except that it looks like it’s been there forever. Real, cosy Dickensian vibes, bringing out the building’s period features, in what was the old sports bar Calcio.

And in an impressive turn of events, GM Mayor Andy Burnham dropped by to cut the ribbon.

We’ll be doing a deeper dive with the team behind it next week, taking in the food, the drinks and… the taxidermy.

Former Manchester mayor @andyburnham could be our new Prime Minister in a matter of weeks.

With this in mind… where would you put his feted ‘Number 10 North’, which is likely to be in this fair city.

Here’s some ideas for you Andy...

PLANS REVEALED FOR THE NEW DESTINATION RESTAURANT AND BAR FROM THE MIND BEHIND SEXY FISH AND MANHATTAN’S MONKEY BAR

Introducing Zadie’s - the new destination restaurant under construction at Medlock Square, the new development between the Etihad and Co-op Live.

It’s not even served a cocktail yet, but the pedigree behind the project says it all.

We chatted to Laura Montana, who developed Sexy Fish alongside Richard Caring and ran the iconic Monkey Bar alongside Jeremy King and Vanity Fair’s Graydon Carter in the famous Elysee Hotel in Manhattan, at one time one of the hottest places to get a martini in the world.

For the pan-Asian-inspired Zadie's, she’ll be inviting chef Paolo Bianchi, of Zuma and Alain Ducasse fame, and homegrown cocktail goddess Cressida Lawlor on the journey with her.

It’s set to open later this year, and we can’t wait.

THE UK’S FIRST ‘PIZZA DOUGH BAKERY’ COMES TO MANCHESTER

Ferma takes inspiration from the comforting nature of high street favourite Greggs, combined with the doughy perfection of your favourite artisanal pizza spot.

The result is a spread of sweet and savoury bakes using pizza dough, which makes for optimal pastry firmness, flavour and golden colour.

The line-up will change weekly, but you can expect to see things like marmite muffins, Cornish calzone and mini Detroit pizzas. That birria sausage roll is well worth a try, and you can still enjoy the original Foldies - folded pizza base sandwiches - offering too.

With all the baked goods priced at £3-£6.50, it’s a great new lunchtime option to add to your rotation.

THE CHIP SHOP IN MARPLE BRIDGE WHERE THE PIES CAN’T STOP WINNING AWARDS

Richard isn’t your regular chip shop owner. After a career in the fashion industry, he segued into it via a stint running food stands at music festivals. Six years ago he became the owner of Town Street Fryer, in and among some impressive foodie neighbours on Marple Bridge’s Town Street.

He takes it very seriously. They don’t use any chemicals or preservatives on their chips, and the potatoes are from just up the road. They opt for a gluten-free batter on the fish for enhanced crispiness, (and are entirely gluten-free operation on Tuesday evening and Wednesdays), and the mushy peas taste like actual peas. That’s all before you get onto the main event - the pies - which have their own wall of fame, having picked up countless national and regional awards in the past half-decade.

From steak and cheese to chicken, leek and tarragon, these pies are fresh, hearty and flavoursome. There’s also a plethora of vegan and veggie options too. And the steady stream of locals sticking their head in to say ‘hi’ to Richard proves the locals know that they’re on to a very, very good thing here.

With a not-too-over-the-top menu, and a focus on freshness, they’ve pretty much hit on the recipe for success. Like the chalkboard sign above the counter reads: ‘Not all pies are created equal’.

Even better, you can pop to the Royal Scot across the road to enjoy them with a pint, or head down today (Saturday 19 July, 1-5pm) for Marple Bridge Summer Street Party.

JOSEPH HOLT OPENS ANCOATS’ ‘NEWEST OLDEST PUB’ AFTER EIGHT YEARS

After closing way back in 2018, Ancoats lost one of its last and oldest community pubs.

And while it’s been a long time coming - The Shamrock has finally become The Spinner’s Rest, thanks to a painstaking restoration that has taken eight years, courtesy of Manchester’s historic brewery @JosephHolt1849.

This is a proper local, open to all, and hoping to become a proper pillar of the community, with great pub grub, top pies, sports on the telly, its very own bespoke lager and an enviable suntrap of a terrace - which when it rains is fully cover-up-able (luckily).

It opens on 29 June. Go down and say hello.

Convenience can be overrated. And the stunning quality of the food coming out of this shipping container in Ancoats basically cancels out what it might lack in Pret-A-Manger-style omnipresence.

Marleo Street Food is the passion project of Maria and Leonardo, who met while working together at San Carlo.

Now they’re making featherlight focaccia, deep, homestyle trays of lasagna, Sicilian ravazzate (filled pastries), arrancini, super-soft amaretti biscuits and all kinds of other delights in their own unit at Pollard Yard, halfway between the city centre and the Etihad.

But the true showstopper is their porchetta - rolled pork belly with herbs, served in healthy slices crammed into their homemade bread with roast potatoes, caramelised onions and smoked cheese. It’s sensational.

By the queues of people turning up every lunchtime, it’s not just us who are making the pilgrimage either…

THE INDIAN RESTAURANT WHICH DELIVERS ITS LAMB CHOPS TO LONDON FOOTBALL STAR EVERY WEEK

Some lamb chops are so good, you’d be hankering for them from 200 miles away.

Such are the fine cuts at Tyga, which are rubbed deeply with spice, marinated, char-grilled and - in one particular case - packed up and sent off in a taxi to London to a certain Premiership footballer.

They’re pretty good, to be fair.

But they’re far from the only highlight of the menu at this city centre gem. We’d travel a fair old distance for their lambshank too.

ZACK HIPPS OPENS UNAPOLOGETICALLY MANC CAFE IN THE HEART OF THE NORTHERN QUARTER

The latest addition to the Northern Quarter’s cafe scene is set to open this month, and the whole approach is bombastically Mancunian.

Morning Glory (see what they did there?) is food creator Zack Hipps ‘love letter to Manchester’. Expect bees, brews and fully-loaded bagels.

There’ll be baked goods from local bakers Vanilli's Cake Co. as well as pièce-de-résistance, the reinvented Manchester Tart - a much-overlooked local delicacy.

It’s aimed at busy city workers and residents, with plenty of grab-and-go sustenance, but you can sit in and admire the bright yellow, foliage-filled decor too.

Coffee is by Dark Arts and freshly prepared canned matcha is by The Matcha Kyoto, plus there are heaps of vegan options on food and drink.

Open every day of the week from 8-4, this is one to add to your busy work day or lazy day off rotation.

THE BURGER AND COLOMBIAN FOOD TRUCK IN A BACK GARDEN IN BOLTON

It’s not necessarily the last place you’d expect to find Columbian street food and great burgers, but Bburger is not far off it.

Sebastian - a surveyor by trade, and a gigging chef the rest of the time - and his wife Lisa are the folks behind it, a family business in the realest sense, run from their yard in Little Lever.

Sebastian is a dab hand at hand-making his own empanadas and arepas, as well as loading up seasoned fries up with Colombian sausage and PROPER guacamole (the secret is keeping it chunky).

Obsessed with gaming too (hence the nostalgic 8-bit vibes on the menu), he’s serving up great smash burgers with a Latin twist too, and in just six weeks of being open, they’re selling out on a regular basis.

Head to their page and order ahead via the usual delivery suspects…

THE BEST CHINESE BBQ IN MANCHESTER IS HIDDEN UNDER THE MANCUNIAN WAY

Plenty cosplay at streetfood, when in actual fact, they have a roof over their heads 100% of the time.

The roof over Best Friend Shaokao is the A57(M), more popularly known as the Mancunian Way, where chums Alven and Wei (the titular ‘best friends’) wheel out their traditional Chinese barbecue - or shaokao.

Found where Cambridge Street crosses beneath the Ring Road, Alven and Wei started their food truck business three years ago, as a nostalgic flavour of home for the legion of ex-pats and students that have landed in Manchester in recent years.

There’s beef tendon or gizzards for the more adventurous, as well as chicken, pork belly, lamb, and once scorched the hot skewers are stuffed into a plastic bag for you to take to wherever you’re headed, or just tear open and eat as you stand, with a piece of warm flatbread to wrap around them.

Like all the best things, you have to work a little for this experience - generally opening from 5.30pm to 10.30pm on Saturdays (not every Saturday though, so check their Instagram to avoid bitter disappointment - they sometimes open on random other days too).

Few places in Manchester do stuff as authentic as this without feeling the need to shout about how authentic it is.

Best Friend ShaoKao is just there doing it.

THE WHOLE TANDOOR LEG OF LAMB AT NEIGHBOURHOOD FAVOURITE CURRY HOUSE

There are show-stopping dishes, and then there’s this, the tandoori raan - a whole leg of lamb, slow-cooked for hours in the tandoor oven, then finished with a rich, rogan josh gravy made with the lamb juices.

It’s a stunner and worth the short journey out of town to Burnage’s most excellent Chef Platters to experience it.

Give them 24 hours notice, and they’ll prepare you a feast from their ‘luxury platters’ menu, this one coming served with an Afghan-style Kabuli pilau and roasted vegetables.

Should the occasion be particularly special, you can even pair it with a bottle of Dom Pérignon Champagne.

If you’re looking for something slightly less ostentatious, but just as delicious, there are some new dishes on the menu too - chicken stuffed with spiced lamb mince, a sizzling seafood platter and the tiranga chicken tikka; hunks of chicken coloured green, white and orange to represent the Indian flag.

In a city crammed with great curry houses, this is absolutely one of our favourites.
