But over the years, the culture around the drug has seen E—or X, or pills, or pingers, or Garys—take on way more meaning to people than just this simple exchange of serotonin. Dance music as we know it wouldn’t exist without ecstasy. Imagine what the last 35 years might look like if that were the case. Now, imagine what they would’ve looked like without night clubs, festivals, and raves; the billions of human interactions that take place within them; and the resultant friendships, weddings, babies, funerals… once you take all of that in, you start to realize why ecstasy culture is such a big deal for so many people. Among them are artists Adam Fierman and Peter Andrew Lusztyk, whose ongoing project Dutch Candy documents the changing face of ecstasy pill designs. Their euphoric archive is being released as a book, so VICE’s Simon Doherty (@_Simon_Doherty_) caught up with Adam at his Amsterdam home to discuss this niche corner of culture.
