Michael Jackson’s Dangerous album art is a hand-painted masterpiece created by Mark Ryden. It took over six months to complete and is a complex tapestry centered around pop culture and Jackson’s personal history. The concept for the cover was heavily inspired by Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights. Hidden in the chaotic, Neverland-style circus is Jackson’s pet chimpanzee, Bubbles. This is an ode to their close friendship that was rooted in the trials of navigating fame at a young age. This visual spectacle perfectly set the stage for the Dangerous World Tour which was one of the most successful runs in music history. It grossed over $100 million (the equivalent of over $200 million today) and played to nearly 4 million fans across 69 sold-out shows. To this day, the Dangerous cover art remains one of the most detailed and meaningful album covers ever created. It stands as further proof that the King of Pop was an artistic visionary.
