Today on PS, guest writer Erik Östling (@gubbstil) explains why he’s obsessed with the style of older men: “Last year, a few publications like WSJ, GQ and Highsnobiety picked up on a microtrend inspired by older men’s style, which they called “Grandpa Core” or “Eclectic Grandpa”, with Tyler the Creator being the person referenced. “American Vogue, however, ended the conversation on a sharp note, pointing out the irony of following a trend where the whole point is to look like “someone who’s spent a lifetime curating a collection of clothing and accessories” yet as with all microtrends, it was supposed to happen overnight. “I read those articles and the accompanying discussions with a smile because, for the past 10 years or so, I’ve been observing and documenting well-dressed old men in the streets and had come to exactly the same conclusion: I can’t get away with dressing like an old man because I don’t have the experience. Simon discusses the details of his second outfit with this tobacco linen suit from @sartoriaciardi - ⁠ ⁠ "The other combination is the classic Italian Background, with an old denim/linen shirt and a navy grenadine tie. ⁠ ⁠ Although in London the thing I wear it with most is a denim shirt like this open-necked, or other shirts with some pattern and colour going on. A blue-and-white butcher’s stripe is great, for example, as is a green stripe.⁠ ⁠ ⁠They’re all summer combinations, certainly, and in the UK you’d want it to be a sunny day really. But it’s a more subtle option for the sun than a cream linen or some brighter colour. And it’s great for a wedding somewhere in the Mediterranean. ⁠ ⁠ The other thing tobacco is lovely for is mid-brown leathers, like the @edwardgreen1890 Belgravia loafers shown above. They’ve had a lot of love and polish over the years, but even so, with linen like this those brown tones really sing.
