The wonderful Simon Crompton joins us in the Carpenters Arms for another Pub Chat! In this episode, he’ll talk with Finn about how his magazine Permanent Style came to be, the development of his personal taste, and the disappearance of defined trends.
Simon discusses the details of his second outfit with this tobacco linen suit from @sartoriaciardi -

"The other combination is the classic Italian Background, with an old denim/linen shirt and a navy grenadine tie.

Although in London the thing I wear it with most is a denim shirt like this open-necked, or other shirts with some pattern and colour going on. A blue-and-white butcher’s stripe is great, for example, as is a green stripe.

They’re all summer combinations, certainly, and in the UK you’d want it to be a sunny day really. But it’s a more subtle option for the sun than a cream linen or some brighter colour. And it’s great for a wedding somewhere in the Mediterranean.

The other thing tobacco is lovely for is mid-brown leathers, like the @edwardgreen1890 Belgravia loafers shown above. They’ve had a lot of love and polish over the years, but even so, with linen like this those brown tones really sing. Goes for belts too."

The other clothes shown are:

- Bespoke linen/denim shirt from @lucaavitabile
- @drakesdiary big-knot grenadine tie
- ‘Hardy’ sunglasses from @ebmeyrowitz
- Olive socks from @andersonandsheppard
- 'Belgravia' tassel loafers from @edwardgreen1890 in dark oak

Our long-running series on the menswear ‘rules’ returns, with today's PS article addressing if your socks should always match your trousers.

As Simon writes-

"The key, as ever, is not to follow any rule blindly. Instead, see these rules as advice from a well-dressed friend, a well-informed and well-meaning one, but still one you might still happily ignore – because his style is not yours, or because you think he’s just wrong. "

It’s fair to say that since we first covered the Korean tailors @assisibespokehouse here on Permanent Style, they’ve become extremely popular. They are now travelling to more destinations around the world, for longer, and we’ve seen many readers using them in London, New York and elsewhere. It is well deserved.

In today’s PS article, Simon reviews their handmade-to-measure suit made in a glen check Fox flannel (@foxbrothers1772), as he shares -

“The Assisi offering is not like normal made-to-measure, which is usually something a brand offers from its factory, as a way to provide an altered version of the ready-to-wear.

Assisi uses the same tailors as its bespoke, but does a little more machine work in the chest and trousers and largely skips fittings. Interestingly, although they bring fitting garments to the trunk shows for MTM, they do then create personal paper patterns for the customer that are in theory more nuanced than most factory-made products.”

Other clothes pictured:

Bespoke shirt from @davinoshirtnapoli in ice-blue poplin
@emarinella silk tie

The nice thing about finding something new that works with your style is that it opens up a slightly different look, an adjacent and only subtly different option.

For Simon, black jeans are a great case for this, as he writes in today’s PS article -

“ I love jeans for their character, versatility and universality. But tailoring is my first love, so finding ways to wear the two together has been a long-running project.

Black jeans, I’ve found, are particularly good because when they fade they're basically as versatile with tailoring as dark-grey flannels. Not quite as smart of course, but just as good colour-wise.

I'd never considered this until I saw them reframed by popularity among friends and by fashion in general. I had my own perspective and that was shifted slightly; now they're a really useful and enjoyable part of my stye.”
