In 2002, @paigemycoskie and I were contestants on The Amazing Race. At the time, we had no idea that experience would become a kind of training ground for the rest of our lives. Years later, Paige was there in the earliest days of TOMS. I was in Argentina and needed a logo for this shoe company I was starting. She designed the TOMS logo in a day. Charged me $500. Still the best $500 I have ever spent. Then she went on to build something completely her own. So she started going to thrift stores and flea markets hunting for the softest old sweatshirts and worn in t-shirts she could find. And eventually she thought, what if I just made this myself. Not to sell. Not to start a company. Just because she wanted clothes that felt like she had owned them forever and nobody was making them. That is where it started. A personal itch that nobody else was scratching. The best businesses almost always begin exactly that way. Jim told this story on the No Magic Pill podcast and I could not stop thinking about it. He sat down with a very successful mentor, admitted he was quitting, and the mentor asked him one question nobody had ever asked before. Why are you in school? What do you want to be, do, have, contribute? Jim had no answer. He had just assumed you go to school, get a job, follow the path. And I’ve noticed this in so many people who have been through depression, anxiety, or a dark season and come out the other side: The story we tell ourselves matters. The mind can become a very painful place to live when the only sentence playing on repeat is: I am not enough. So sometimes healing begins by giving yourself a different sentence. Not as a cure. When I did not feel enough I was either living in the past, drowning in shame and regret, or living in the future, chasing the next thing that might finally make me enough.
