Ultralight gear 🤝 liveability

The new Alpha UL 1-Person Tent weighs just 660g (including pegs and pole), about the weight of a hoodie. But we still chose an ever-so-slightly heavier fabric, because a more enjoyable experience outside far outweighs saving a few grams.

Across the 2 Kilo Project, we worked closely with our mills to use quieter, more comfortable fabrics, balancing weight and space to create a system that’s actually enjoyable to use.

Quantities are limited, and MEC members are eligible for an exclusive price on these products. Link in bio to shop.

As Member Month comes to a close, we wanted to share one more MEC member story from the backcountry 🌧️ @thevancuniantraveler learned the hard way that when the tent site choice doesn’t pan out, you really need to be able to rely on your gear 😅 Tent pad flooded, boots floating, stove brought inside to stay dry… and somehow, not a drop made it into the MEC Spark.

“One of my favourite shopping experiences at MEC was searching for a tent that could actually handle BC’s unpredictable climate and heavy rainfall. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to walk us through different options, materials, and features to help us find the right fit for our needs. We ended up with a tent we’re genuinely so happy with, and the quality has definitely been tested during extreme BC rainfall.”

Shoutout to our members for continuing to put good gear to the test in the great outdoors.

No TP? No problem. These two backcountry upgrades might just earn a permanent spot in your pack.

First up: the @kulacloth. Designed for anyone who squats to pee, this antimicrobial pee cloth stays hygienic between washes and folds up compactly to keep it separate from the rest of your gear.

Next, meet the @humangear BidetToob. Holding up to 6 ounces of water, this portable bidet helps you stay clean in the backcountry and easily clips onto a carabiner for quick access on the go.

So, what do you think? Link in bio to shop all bath and sanitation products.

How to pick the right pair of skis for you 🎿 PART 2

#MECstaffer Pierre is back to share more of the sometimes-confusing ski terminology:

〰️ Rocker: upward curve at the tip and/or tail that helps with float
〰️ Camber: slight arch underfoot that provides edge grip, stability, and energy when turning on firm snow
〰️ Stiffness: affects responsiveness, stability, and how much power it takes to control
〰️ Sidecut: hourglass shape that determines how easily and tightly a ski turns

Lightweight VS Ultralight backpacking systems. Let’s talk about it. All styles of gear systems have their pros and cons, and the “right” choice depends on how you want to experience the outdoors. So, what are you choosing?

LIGHTWEIGHT SETUP ⚖️ A lightweight kit strikes a balance. Often more durable, more comfortable at camp, and generally more affordable. The tradeoff is extra weight, which can add up quickly and make longer trips feel tougher.

〰️ MEC Vista 40L Backpack
〰️ MEC Aphelion UL -7C Down Sleeping Bag
〰️ MEC Spark UL 1P Tent
〰️ MEC VectAir SL Xtreme 6 Sleeping Pad

ULTRALIGHT SETUP 🪶 All about efficiency. Less weight means the ability to move farther with less effort, keeping the focus on the experience, not your pack. The tradeoff is a steeper learning curve, higher cost, and sacrificing a bit of comfort for performance.

〰️ MEC Alpha UL 1P Tent
〰️ MEC Delta Pivot -2 Sleeping Bag
〰️ MEC Bravo 6 Sleeping Pad
〰️ MEC Charlie 32L UL Pack

GRAVEL SHOE GIVEAWAY!

The new @salomon Aero Blaze 3 GRVL GTX is built for runners who mix it up. From wet single track to gravel detours to city loops. Lightweight, waterproof, and grippy in all the right places. We gave 5 of our staffers a pair to field test, and across the board, the shoes got rave reviews. Scroll down for their takeaways.

Now it’s your turn to try the Salomon Aero Blaze 3 Gravel Gore-Tex Running Shoes... we’re giving away a pair to one lucky winner!

To enter for the chance to win a pair:
1️⃣ Like this post
2️⃣ Follow @mec and @salomon
3️⃣ Tag at least 2 friends you want to go on a trail run with

Giveaway closes on November 11th at 11:59pm PST, and the winner will be announced on November 12th. Contest rules can be found at the link in bio.

YONGHEE
→ “This is a really impressive shoe. I have slightly wider feet, but this one fits great—it has a more generous toe-box and it wraps my foot really securely and comfortably. The rockered design is also a huge plus; it just helps you roll forward efficiently, which really cuts down on the effort you feel and helps with fatigue.”

ANNE-SOPHIE
→ “Perfect mix of comfort and bounce! Great cushioning, solid grip on both road and trail, and an ultra-comfy fit.”

ELLIOTT
→ “These are extremely capable on more difficult terrain including rocks and roots, while also not tripping you up on more simple terrain such as gravel and pavement. So, if your route often has a mix of it all this shoe could be a great option for you.”

MADISON
→”Usually with shoes, the more cushion, the more you sacrifice stability and grip. However, I found these shoes allowed a bountiful amount of cushion without compromising control.”

JORDAN
→ “These shoes handle every surface really well with plenty of cushion and support. I’m a big fan of the black colourway too. They look clean enough for everyday wear but still perform when you need them to. I’ve also tested them in some heavy rain, and my feet stayed completely dry, even after stepping right into puddles.”

The Delta Pivot -2 Sleeping Bag is part of the MEC 2 Kilo Project, a system designed to cut weight without cutting corners. One of the ways to cut weight? A removable hood. Mark Knight, MEC’s Director of Product Creation, shares the why behind this design feature.

〰️ 900 fill-power down paired with aerogel hybrid insulation for high warmth-to-weight performance
〰️ Lightweight, compressible design built for fast-and-light travel
〰️ Streamlined shape to reduce dead space and retain heat
〰️ Designed as part of a full system, works seamlessly with the Alpha UL Tent and Bravo 6 Pad

#MECStaffer Noa breaks down the backpack fitting process so you don't have to. Looking at two sibling packs from @gregorypacks—the Paragon 50 and Maven 48—here are three simple steps to finding the right fit.

1. Measure your torso 📏

Using a measuring tool, find the distance between your iliac crest (the top of your hip bone) and your C7 vertebra (the bump at the base of your neck). This measurement will help determine the right pack size for your body.

2. Pick your pack 🎒

Both the Gregory Paragon 50 and Gregory Maven 48 are designed for everything from overnight trips to multi-day backpacking adventures. While the features remain the same on both packs, the Maven is made specifically for women, including more inwards facing hip belts and more curvature in the shoulder straps.

Highlight features:

• Full length side-loading access zipper for easy unloading and gear organization

• Flatter back panel for better stability

• Auxiliary pocket on the shoulder strap for easy access to small essentials

3. Try it on ✅

Once you've found the right size, adjust the hip belt, shoulder straps, load lifters and sternum strap so the pack sits comfortably and the weight is distributed properly.

A well-fitted pack can make a huge difference on the trail. Click the link in bio to find your Gregory pack today.
