Something I’ve been monitoring over the past few months.

The low values, lack of wanting to be social, along with a stagnation in progress haven’t been superb for the mental aspect. But if they allow for an identification of the cause, onwards & upwards (literally).

Anyone who’s known me for a few years has probably seen a change. Hopefully this explains the shift a little.

If you feel this might relate to you, speak to a professional and get blood tests before jumping to conclusions.

Don’t ignore the signs from the body :)

Without getting the tissues out that was genuinely one of the best experiences of my life. The support (literally the whole way) was nuts and London always knows how to turn it on come marathon day.

Congrats to all those involved yesterday on either side of the barrier. Said it before but it’s a real tough task to find a bad person in that environment. People out there pushing their body, running for a great cause and those who have chosen to stand on the side to give it some beans. Strong trifecta.

So proud of my time - I know there’s more to give (although I feel this is the case for pretty much every marathon) if the body plays ball, but dealing with that is part of the distance.

The disparity between how good I feel this morning mentally and how bad I feel physically is rather large…

I originally made this account (@gibstarun) as a finsta. I had absolutely no idea it would take me to where it has, which I’m incredibly grateful for that. But in the past few months, I’ve struggled to get a detachment from running.

The heavy weighting (job, hobby & content - all of my own making!) has influenced my decisions too much. Minor things like seeing the word in your username, hence linking progress to that (times falling & enjoyment rising) have arguably led to the opposite happening.

An irrelevant change for others, but one needed for me, especially when compounded with the other changes being made. Longevity 🎯

That is actually my surname btw I haven’t just used the one they recommend

Top flight Aintree 5k - 15:16 (PB)

A race that actually reflects my fitness. Very happy with that one. Good signs 👍🏻

Had to either stick with the sub 15min guys or go solo. Group had disintegrated by the second lap made it a solo affair anyway 😅

Take that during a 161k week 😁

Decided to take all metrics off my watch face today to try and reduce pressure of hitting a pace. Could tell the group I found myself in was hot (for me) but firmed it til about 6k where I deployed the parachute. Regrets on my behalf & an incredibly grim way to run a race, but proud to see it out 👍🏻

More there with a taper & actually checking pace hopefully!

After a perfectly paced 3:20 first 1k, I knew that wasn’t on the cards and told @callum_charleston_ he was on his own (for the rest of the recovery run)

Luckily for me, I actually ending up grabbing a quick break after rep 11 (stomach induced)

I’ve got 42.2 x 1km (0s) at that pace on 21st September, which is slightly alarming. However, that’s an issue for another day 👍🏻

Give these a go in your weekly 5k training plan ⬇️ 

1. Hard Hill session

- These will help improve your VO2 and should “raise your ceiling”
- Example session: 4 x 1min hard hills, 3min rest, 3k @ 10k effort, 3min rest, 4 x 1min hard hills
- The one session of the week to work very hard!

2. Controlled 20-25min Tempo

- Not all out, more of a strong controlled effort
- A 5k race itself is a tempo, so makes sense to do this in training
- Look to progress pace slightly each week

3. Aerobic 75-90min long run**
- Aim to keep heart rate below 155bpm so not easy, but never working too hard
- These should feel comfortable, so if in doubt pull back on your pace

4. Very easy run (2/3 per week)**
- Run to heart rate and aim for below 135bpm (if not <130bpm)
- Pace is irrelevant here, let the body recover & absorb the stimulus from your sessions. Easy is a feeling, not a pace!

If you add in a couple of target race pace sessions 2-6 weeks out (swap for the hills / tempo), you’ll be in a good spot 👍🏻

**when tracking heart rate, make sure to use an external monitor, don’t trust the wristwatch!
