“Maybe this is the grown-up, more sophisticated, more educated version of myself,” Athena Calderone (@eyeswoon) muses of her new Manhattan home she designed with her team at @studioathenacalderone.

Eight years after featuring her much-emulated Greek Revival Brooklyn town house, we’re ushering in Athena’s new era on the cover of our April issue.

There are extraordinary moments in our lives where we are reminded that magic exists. Like when I boarded the @belmond @vsoetrain carriage last year and stepped back in time to the golden age. As the train kept a quiet rhythm along the tracks from Venice to Paris, we donned our most elegant attire, clinked crystal coupes, dined, laughed, and danced long into the night as jazz softly crooned. The glamor and decadence of this holiday season took me back to that magical 24 hours. Forever grateful for this experience, for the chance to slow down, to indulge in the grandeur of the 1920s with my boys, and above all, to dream.

It was this week, November 2019, when I randomly met this 7-week old little guy at a women in film event at the Public hotel. I fell in love at first sight, took him from the PR gal who was fostering him, placed him on my shoulder, and never let him go. I could have never imagined then how much joy, love, and light he’d bring into our lives—or that one day, he would quite literally save Victor’s life! Our family changed forever that day, for the better. You are the sweetest, funnest, most frisky, most lovable, and most loyal boy. Happy gotcha day, Tuco 🐾

And thank you to @diannaagron & @savannah_engel

On March 9, I received an email from @dmcasting asking if I’d be interested and available to walk in the @Gucci Cruise show. At first, Elizabeth, on my team, thought it might be spam—but I immediately knew it was real, as I’ve followed casting director, @piergiorgio’s work for years. I was genuinely stunned that this opportunity had found its way to me.

I was asked to submit Polaroids and a video of my walk. The directive—short dress, heels, no makeup. Bursting with excitement, I called on my dear friend of 30 years, @Alikavoussi, founder of @thelionsmgmt. Without hesitation, he said, “You should absolutely say yes—come into the agency.” On March 12th, his incredible team captured this video.

From there, everything fell into place: a fitting in New York, a meeting with @demna in Milan, and then, on April 27th, the official confirmation that I would be walking the show. The whirlwind that ensued was unlike anything I have ever experienced. I welcomed multiple 6+ hour days of fittings and glam tests in the week leading up to the show. All of it ELECTRIC and so outside of my daily reality.

Honestly, these past two months have felt nothing short of meteoric. So much of what I’ve quietly worked toward for years has suddenly come into focus all at once—an Architectural Digest cover, my first bespoke furniture collection under my own studio, and now… somehow, this deeply personal, 21-year-old ambition of modeling has circled back around to meet me again.

There’s something profoundly emotional about realizing that the things we long for don’t always arrive when we first imagine them. Sometimes life asks you to become yourself—fully—first. And then, at the exact moment when you’re finally ready to hold that dream, it returns with even greater meaning.

To experience this alongside Ali, who has believed in me so deeply, makes it infinitely more special. His note to me before walking the runway was pure gold and grounded me in exactly who I am to the core: “A club girl who knows her rhythm!” I love you and thank you! I’m reveling in every second of it—with gratitude, disbelief, and a very full heart.

What a night. What a spread!

Last night was the first time we truly felt this home come alive—the crescendo of an incredibly exciting month. Noshing, mingling, clinking glasses… It was undeniably celebratory—champagne chilling in the bathtub, caviar bumps in the media room, and an opulent spread across the kitchen island—yet also deeply tender, filled with so much love.

Feeling incredibly grateful today.

I will never forget the first time I entered Victor’s sacred space — in his basement recording studio in the Bensonhurst home he grew up in. It was summer of 1995 and he was revealing his work, his world, to me. And in many ways, unknowingly, he was revealing so much more about who he was. I watched the way Victor navigated the studio with a level of focus and confidence that I found extremely sexy. But the moment burned in my memory was one particular piece of analog equipment where the dial was worn down from years of use. I watched him finesse the dial with the most gentle touch, rotating it so precisely, and with utter grace and intention. Later, I would watch him touch his vinyl with the same delicate touch, mastery, and confidence.

I realize it is strange for me to share such an intimate memory but I whole-heartedly believe that I fell in love with him and understood his character in that moment. Victor embodies everything I love in a human, in a lover, and in a friend. In the most precious snapshot, I saw it all on that day — his character is rooted in groundedness. He embodies clarity and confidence — never questions his choices and knows who he is as a man, and as an artist. He is gentle and sensitive. Deeply loyal, and sexy AF. I became a different version of myself through our love — more playful, comfortable in my own skin. He is my partner for life. My ride or die. My teacher, my co-adventurer, best friend, and a father so tender that I often wonder how a love so pure exists. We are teams in every sense of the word, building our life, our world, together — from nothing. And that gentle touch from so many years ago carries through to everything he touches in our life together, today. I love you so deeply Vic. Happiest birthday my lover @vcalderone

This past week, atop the breathtaking snow-covered mountains of Whistler, I felt three versions of myself beautifully converge. There is the adventure-loving thrillseeker my father raised—happiest outside, snowboarding at speed, lungs filled with cold alpine air. Then there’s the super mama caretaker in me who loves to nurture her boys with slow-cooked bolognese or nourishing chicken soup to warm them up after a day on the slopes. And finally, there is the design-loving side of me who still marvels at how profoundly a space can shape our lived experience.

That last version of me was especially present at @wedgewhistler—a Brutalist modern home nestled into the mountains—where we were so generously hosted by @boutiquehomes. Thoughtfully designed to near perfection, its geometric architecture—clad in blackened wood and concrete with expansive glass walls—carves a striking silhouette against the forest, the snow, and the rushing green river at its base. (A river that three fearless 23-year-olds—and one very enthusiastic pup—decided to plunge into. Brrrr!)

On our last night there, after far too much red wine and with bellies blissfully full, we gathered in the living room laughing and lingering in that way you only do when you don’t want a trip to end. I asked Jivan and his boys, “Do you think aesthetics play a role in your experience of a place?” Without hesitation, they all agreed—beauty elevates everything!

But what do you think? Does the design of a space deepen your connection to it? Does it shape the way you remember a place long after you’ve left?

Love. Family. Connection.

One year ago today, @vcalderone and I stood inside an ancient 11th-century chapel in Umbria — at the magical @tenutadimurlo — to renew our wedding vows. Twenty-five years of marriage held within a single moment. Surrounded only by our immediate family, we exchanged vows that felt both familiar and new — made sacred by our son, Jivan, who officiated the ceremony with such profound words and heartfelt emotion. There wasn’t a dry eye in the chapel.

This trip also marked the first time my family had ever traveled to Italy together, making it an even more profound experience — a rare and precious gift filled with memories I will cherish for a lifetime.

Umbria embraced us with her quiet beauty. We gathered around long tables, shared stories, laughed until our bellies ached, and ventured on a truffle hunt bathed in golden light. We watched the sun sink behind ancient stone walls and took a moment to honor our dad — scattering his ashes among the olive groves and vineyards that ripple across the countryside.

These moments became more than memories; they became part of us — woven into the fabric of our family. Feeling extremely grateful for love and family today!

Three years ago to the day, we stepped across the threshold into what would become our Tribeca story.

Last night, that story unfolded in the softest way. Friends gathered in the living room, candlelight flickering, songbirds crooning in the distance, champagne poured as the hours slipped toward midnight. We lingered, unrushed, held by the moment.

When they invited us along to the second scene of their evening, we smiled and declined. “Do you ever actually leave?” they teased. And lately, the answer feels like no.

After two years of living inside the bones of this renovation — every detail considered, every material chosen with intention — I’m finding so much joy in simply being here. Watching the light move across the wood paneling. Noticing the way the house shifts throughout the day. Letting it all settle.

This morning, scrolling through my camera roll, I realized it was February 2023 when we first laid eyes on this gem. It had sat empty for 20+ years — impossibly full of possibility. Thank you @nickgavinnyc !

It feels like the right moment to share a collection of images that trace its transformation.

And soon, VERY soon, I’ll share the finished home.

NOTE: please don’t fret… every bit of historic wood paneling was preserved and restored to its glory!

Let’s take it back to September 30, 1999. I was 25 years old & newly married. Victor held a residency at The Roxy in NYC, had just finished remixing “Frozen” & “Ray of Light” from Madonna’s newly released  album, & she held a surprise performance at The Roxy.

Dolce & Gabbana asked Victor to do the music for their Spring/Summer 2000 runway show. They had also just designed my wedding gown, and Madonna had gifted me her stylist Luigi to do my hair for the wedding. To say our lives had been catapulted into an otherworldly stratosphere would be quite the understatement!!!

So there I was, sitting at my very 1st runway show in Milano, watching legendary models (Gisele included!) march down the runway in leopard tights, belts as skirts, Swarovski crystal bras & chokers, brocade corsets, and towering platforms. I was in AWE, in HEAVEN. It was so over-the-top, so maximalist, beyond sexy, & absolutely perfect for this nightlife lady!

In the months that followed, I likely wore every sample that came down that runway. Every Saturday, my best friend Justo would dress me in a crystal bra & micro mini. He would do my hair, Sonia would do my makeup, & we would sip champagne in Justo’s West Village apartment before heading to the club. It was our ritual & I LOVED IT!

I wore this look in Tel Aviv on a kibbutz where Victor had a show. I wore a similar version in Miami for the millennium with my blue wig.  And the most legendary moment of all: on the first Monday in May 1999, I wore the full red paisley, fur hat, wooden platform look to the Met Gala, where I sat beside Whitney Houston, Isabella Rossellini, Stefano, & Domenico.

When I tell you it was an otherworldly year, I was NOT joking!!!

Anyway, fast-forward 25 years... I was packing for my 50th birthday / 25th wedding anniversary celebration in Rome, dug into the archives, & pulled out my brocade corset & belt/skirt from this very collection & thought... wouldn’t this be fun again!

I never shared these images, so I’m sharing them now because, wouldn’t you know it, right on cue I KEEP seeing this collection appear on Instagram.

Everything is cyclical, I suppose. And I am LOVING all of these memories flooding back!

Often when we admire a beautiful bathroom (or an @archdigest cover girl!), we don’t see the underbelly of the renovation process. The reveal of the final design this week doesn’t capture the weekly site meetings, months of painstaking decision-making, problem-solving, and all the minutia that goes into the years of crafting and constructing a space. I thought it might be interesting to share some of the choices that consumed our team along the way—so today, I’m giving you a glimpse into what it actually looked like.

The first challenge arrived when we discovered that the pipe running to the bathtub couldn’t be buried in the floor as we’d hoped. This meant an unsightly pipe needed to visibly run along the window which was less than optimal after designing our statement vanity. After much rumination, we decided to box out the pipe & clad it in black stone so it ties into the contrasing base molding around the perimeter of the room. It looks beautifully intentional now.Budgetary & weight constraints meant I couldn’t fabricate a solid marble tub. After months of research, we sourced the perfect undermount tub and fabricated a stone surround to envelop it.

My heart sank just a little when we realized the mosaic tiles we ordered were too electric white—missing the historic integrity we hoped to achieve. My brilliant foreman, Jesse, established a tea-staining formula that gave us the perfectly aged look we desired. I love a DIY where you least expect it! Uncertain of where to mount mirrors over the vanity, I collaborated with the craftspeople at @amuneal to create an exceptional floating design suspended within the window. This journey became an exercise in making the bathroom feel as though it had always belonged. Even necessary concessions led to solutions that made the room feel cohesive and deliberate. I’m so happy to finally pull back the curtain on the 2-year journey that shaped this space. Would you like me to give you a bathroom tour where I share the references from my travels?

I have spent 3+ years designing, ideating, adapting, and obsessing over every last detail of this kitchen. And now… now I finally get to live here. To cook here. To gather here with my family and friends!

I also get to revel in its beauty — watching the light dance across the lacquer throughout the day. What a gift to play with branches once again, in a space that carries so much emotion for me.

Would you like to hear more about my intention and material choices in designing this space?

So you were wondering where I keep all my stuff?

It’s a fair question! Anyone who knows me knows I’m…well, pretty disorganized. Which is exactly why it was essential to design this home with thoughtful storage — a place for everything, all tucked away behind closed doors. So I thought I’d share a little glimpse of the hidden storage nooks in my new home.

Should I do a part two and take you inside my closet? Let me know!

Today marks 27 years married to the love of my life.

Victor, being loved by you is the truest thing I have ever felt. You ground me in ways I could never put into words. Still my best friend. Still get butterflies. Still deep belly laughs. Still dreaming and growing together.

This timeless love is my life’s greatest gift. My gold.
It’s me and you, baby. ALWAYS!

My Valentine since 1997—how insane is that!? Twenty-nine years of loving you. Of laughing with you. Of dreaming beside you. Our love story feels as timeless as they come, born in the ’90s—an era in NYC that felt pure, carefree, and iconic. Effortless, then and now.

I’m always looking for the thread that ties our past and present—how the things we invite into our lives today carry the same ethos we began with. @chanelofficial COCO CRUSH moves the way we do—bold and soft, defined by feeling rather than rules. Just like us.

Our love is iconic and effortless, @vcalderone. And so is this collection, @chanelofficial. I’ll channel my ’90s Athena era with you anytime—white baby tees, corsets, vintage Levi’s, and gold chokers for life, from 1997 to 2026.

Thank you for giving me the confidence to carry myself with elegance and ease, Vic. I mean Chanel. I mean… both.

You never forget your firsts. The first time I stepped into this living room was also the first time I saw the soft light filtering through its grand-scale windows, and the first time I felt the history emanating from its wood-paneled walls. The room felt simultaneously empty yet full. In that moment, I vowed to be its steward, preserving its elegance while making it my own.

Of all the rooms in our Tribeca home, the living room was the least interrupted. After a period of immersive self-study into early 20th-century design, a commitment to artisanship was paramount if I was to honor its beauty in this next iteration. But first, I needed to ground the design. With their bespoke approach to rug making, collaborating with @colbourns brought the level of craft, texture, and composition I was after.

I loved designing this custom rug, utilizing their soft silk fibers to offer a plush, inviting feel underfoot, while the warm color and scale helped to anchor the room. Looking back, I realize that laying down the rug was another first—a moment when the room shifted from a beautiful space I had inherited to one that truly felt like home.

You asked for it, so I’m revealing what’s behind the minimally designed doors in my walk in closet.

With everything tucked neatly behind parchment-clad panels, it’s almost impossible to grasp just how much depth and storage this space holds. We built in generous hanging areas, an abundance of drawers, and double-deep sections for shoes, while the space above the datum is reserved for longer-term storage—extra pillows, duvets, and more. And I love that a few eagle-eyed viewers noticed the upper “drawers” are actually paneled doors—just a little design trickery to maximize storage.

Because the interior lacks natural light, I wanted to introduce a soft glow that highlights the tactility of the @calicowallpaper-wrapped room. To do that, we drew the eye upward with a custom interior skylight I designed in collaboration with @amuneal.

Would you like a deeper look into the design references behind this space?
