Yes, we made our own (camera-free) wearable. But there’s a deeper reason we think camera-enabled glasses deserve serious pushback. Meta and Google have known that smart glasses open the door to a host of frightening privacy problems, but they’ve pushed ahead anyway. Celebrities like @lorde and @feliciathegoat (Tyler, the Creator) have called them out – we think other tech companies should too. Hands-free recording isn’t worth the risks to our safety and privacy. Let’s all take a moment to appreciate Normal F****** Sunglasses.

Meta’s AI agent can send emails and texts on your behalf. It’s also creating a map of everyone you know and love. This isn’t just a list of names. It’s intimate details like how you feel about a person and how the relationship could be “improved.” Cybersecurity researcher Karan Joshi told Wired that by asking Muse to hand over its instructions, he was able to review them. What he found should make you concerned. Every hour, Muse updates its map of your relationships with friends, family, romantic partners and coworkers. It tracks “tensions and alliances” in your friend group. It tracks your inside jokes and ways of speaking so that conversations with “you” feel natural. And it’s not just pulling from your interactions with that person, it’s pulling from other public pages like Instagram, Facebook and Threads profiles. Take Kalie Robins, a mom who posted a video with her daughter to her small audience on Instagram. She says Meta auto-generated an AI search suggestion under her video: “Who’s the child passenger?” When she opened the AI chat, it bombarded her with information about her minor child it had pulled from pages including grandparents’ online posts and a school’s Facebook page. Now AI agents like Muse are asking for even more information about you and your loved ones. Meta says it’s not sharing Muse’s data with the advertising side of its business. But it also says that the free version of its AI agent will do the trick for most users. If the product is free, you are the product. (this number seems low to me but maybe my circle is just extra fun) it’s not your job to prevent other people from violating your privacy — it’s their job to not be evil. but here are a few ways to more safely store and send these. 1. use a password-protected folder to store, and delete regularly. (i never recommend one-off storage apps from smaller companies because their cybersecurity tends to be worse than your phone’s software provider.) 2. use an encrypted messaging app and turn on disappearing messages if you talk with your teen about bodies and romance, do you also discuss private photos? do they know what it means to respect *other people’s private photos?
