What would happen if you drilled a hole straight through the ice in Antarctica and jumped in?

You jump in and the snow around you quickly changes to dense blue ice. As you go deeper, you realize the air bubbles trapped all around you are from the time of the Renaissance on the surface, then Ancient Rome, then the last Ice Age!

But the pressure is rising and you’re getting closer to Earth’s hot core, the ice suddenly turns into…

To find out what it is, follow along!

What if you just keep going?

Imagine you fly off at the speed of light. After 8.3 minutes, you’d reach our Sun. After 4 hours and 6 minutes, you’d pass the furthest planet in our solar system.

How long do you think it takes you at the speed of light to get to the farthest object humans have ever sent? Follow if you think less than 24 hours.

But at 4 years in, just as you’re passing our nearest star… something weird happens…

These two astronauts just got back from the International Space Station! They were supposed to be on the ISS 8 days, and they stayed more than 9 months. Here’s why...

Back in June, they took off from earth on the Boeing Starliner. To reach the ISS, they had to chase it down, flying out to its orbit 250 miles above Earth and zooming to reach its speed of over 28,000 km/h. But as they approached, some of their thrusters malfunctioned. That made NASA worry the Starliner wouldn’t get the astronauts home safely, so they sent it back empty. But that meant these astronauts needed a different ride home!

Usually there are around 7 crew on the ISS, and NASA swaps 4 out every 6 months or so. So in September, on the next planned SpaceX mission, they only sent 2 - leaving 2 seats back for our astronauts!

And now, they’re safely HOME.

This is the world’s most realistic lightsaber! It’s patented by Disney because they needed a REAL looking lightsaber in Disney Parks…

What makes it special compared to toy versions is that smooth extension and perfect glow. Here’s how it works...

Inside, there’s a clear cap with two long translucent tapes attached to motors that unroll it from the inside, allowing the lightsaber to extend upwards. As they extend out of the hilt, the tapes bend into a concave shape to create a rigid blade.

On the tapes are a series of bright LEDS that are programed with strobing and flickering effects to create that perfect lightsaber glow as you move it around.

My last question was: What can I do with it?

I interviewed NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang for the second ever episode of Huge Conversations.

In the last few years, NVIDIA has skyrocketed to become one of the world’s most valuable companies. That’s because, beginning in the 90s, they led a fundamental shift in how computers work, now unleashing the current explosion of what’s possible with technology.

A huge amount of the most futuristic tech you’re hearing about - in AI, robotics, gaming, self-driving cars, breakthrough medical research - relies on new chips and software designed by him and his company.

During the dozens of background interviews I did to prepare for this, what struck me most was how much Jensen Huang has already influenced all our lives over the last 30 years, and how many are saying it’s just the beginning of something even bigger…

We all need to know what he’s building and why, and most importantly, what he’s trying to build next. Watch now, link in bio.

This is Disney’s famous “Holotile” - it’s basically a treadmill but in every direction! Here’s how it works...

Up close, you can see the floor I’m walking on is made of rotating circular tiles. One gear on the bottom controls overall spin, and another on top controls the angle of the head…

But… how does it know which way I’m going?

I think this is awesome. For more optimistic science and tech stories, follow for our show Huge If True!

This is the biggest black hole collision ever! And scientists just spotted it.

Two black holes with masses over 100 times our sun collided into each other billions of light years away…creating ripples in the fabric of the universe that we detected here on earth.

This is the first baby cured with a custom DNA fix!

The tool is called CRISPR. To use it, scientists use a protein, directed by molecules that act like GPS coordinates, to search through a cell’s DNA until it finds a match... then makes a cut... so they can stick in new DNA. It’s basically a text editor for genes!

This baby had one tiny error in its DNA causing a life-threatening disorder called CPS1 deficiency. So they fixed that one error out of 3 billion DNA pairs. This is truly huge.

This same tech is saving other lives too - like giving more standardized edits to people with sickle cell disease.

If you want to know more, we just published our newest Huge Conversations with… drumroll please… a scientist who won the Nobel Prize for discovering CRISPR, Dr. Jennifer Doudna! It was an honor to speak with her, and the conversation (and potential of CRISPR) truly blew my mind. Link in bio.

Sam Altman responds to the bunnies on the trampoline…

I asked OpenAI CEO Sam Altman if he’s seen the bunnies on a trampoline video. If you haven’t seen it, this video of bunnies jumping on a trampoline went incredibly viral. There’s even a popular (and super creative) song about it now.

One reason so many people reacted so strongly to it may be that it was the first time they watched a video, enjoyed it, and then later found out it was completely AI generated.

I asked Sam Altman to imagine it’s 2030, and we’re teenagers scrolling whatever teenagers scroll in 2030. How are we figuring out what’s real and not real?

This plane cured my fear of flying.

A Zero G flight is incredibly strenuous – not just for the occupants (though definitely them too, it’s called the Vomit Comet for a reason!) but also for the plane!

A Zero G flight requires 3 pilots to complete 31 maneuvers that involve repeatedly experiencing VERY steep inclines, HEAVY G forces, and casually diving toward the Earth.

I assumed these planes needed to be specially designed and reinforced to pull this off.

It turns out… I was wrong. Follow along to find out more!

This new plane just went faster than sound WITH NO AUDIBLE SONIC BOOM. And it’s a big deal for bringing back supersonic planes you can fly in.

You used to be able to get from New York to London in 3 and a half hours. But that all changed when the famous Concorde stopped flying, in part because many countries banned supersonic flight over land, largely because of the BOOOOOOM it makes as it passes by.

But this plane, the XB1 made by Boom, showed how we might bring supersonic back - because the boom never made it to the ground.

And the way they did that is pretty cool...

What if you got sucked into a black hole?

First you’d be smashing into burning hot gas and dust inside what’s called the accretion disk. As you get closer to the center, you’d notice the universe looks like it’s speeding up, because the black hole is so massive it’s warping space and time around you.

Going deeper, you’d reach a point where if you looked to your left or right, you might see the back of your own head! Because gravity here is so strong, light is getting bent completely around the black hole…

You’re now approaching the event horizon. Where the gravitational pull is so strong, even light can’t escape.

As you pass beyond it, in a supermassive black hole, your body is being stretched and squished. The gravity is increasing so quickly, your feet are pulled away from your head in a process called “spaghettification”

And since no light can escape the event horizon, the last we’d see of you is a slowly fading image of what you looked like right before you crossed it.

What if you just kept shrinking?

By the time you’re smaller than an ant, you could safely jump off a chair – air resistance lets you glide down. But bad news, your voice is so high that no human can hear you anymore! Plus, insects are monsters!

Now, smaller, cells are huge next to you! Going smaller, now you’re being bombarded by air molecules

You go inside an atom and you find, there’s a surprising amount of empty space here. If you go small enough and somehow keep the same mass… whoops, sorry…

At first, nothing! We’d keep orbiting the empty spot.

And then… DARKNESS

But the scariest part is: What would happen to the Sun’s gravity?
