What would happen if you drilled a hole straight through the ice in Antarctica and jumped in?

You jump in and the snow around you quickly changes to dense blue ice. As you go deeper, you realize the air bubbles trapped all around you are from the time of the Renaissance on the surface, then Ancient Rome, then the last Ice Age!

But the pressure is rising and you’re getting closer to Earth’s hot core, the ice suddenly turns into…

To find out what it is, follow along!

What if you just keep going?

Imagine you fly off at the speed of light. After 8.3 minutes, you’d reach our Sun. After 4 hours and 6 minutes, you’d pass the furthest planet in our solar system.

How long do you think it takes you at the speed of light to get to the farthest object humans have ever sent? Follow if you think less than 24 hours.

But at 4 years in, just as you’re passing our nearest star… something weird happens…

If you like optimistic science and tech stories, follow for more of our show Huge If True!

How they found the giant squid…

This is the first ever footage of a giant squid in its natural habitat. It took decades to get this footage. And some creative engineering.

The further down into the ocean you go the darker it gets, so when scientists make their way down there with ROV’s or subs the lights and motors typically cause animals adapted for cold, dark isolation to flee.

In 2012, one scientist got creative and finally caught some incredible footage of a deep sea creature we’d never seen before in its natural habitat. For more, subscribe!

This is the biggest black hole collision ever! And scientists just spotted it.

Two black holes with masses over 100 times our sun collided into each other billions of light years away…creating ripples in the fabric of the universe that we detected here on earth.

To go inside the places that detected these ripples, follow along!

What time is it in Antarctica?

Which animal is the most efficient traveler?

This chart shows how efficiently all animals travel, including you!

The closer to the top, the more energy the animal uses, and the farther to the right, the bigger it is. And it turns out you, a human, are pretty darn efficient.

Why do antarctic ocean animals become giants?

Something weird is happening deep in the freezing water at our poles. Animals consistently grow to ENORMOUS sizes.

Spiders the size of dinner plates and squid larger than a school bus. “Detecting multiple leviathan class organisms in this area…”

WHY?

Sam Altman responds to the bunnies on the trampoline…

I asked OpenAI CEO Sam Altman if he’s seen the bunnies on a trampoline video. If you haven’t seen it, this video of bunnies jumping on a trampoline went incredibly viral. There’s even a popular (and super creative) song about it now.

One reason so many people reacted so strongly to it may be that it was the first time they watched a video, enjoyed it, and then later found out it was completely AI generated.

I asked Sam Altman to imagine it’s 2030, and we’re teenagers scrolling whatever teenagers scroll in 2030. How are we figuring out what’s real and not real?

This plane cured my fear of flying.

A Zero G flight is incredibly strenuous – not just for the occupants (though definitely them too, it’s called the Vomit Comet for a reason!) but also for the plane!

A Zero G flight requires 3 pilots to complete 31 maneuvers that involve repeatedly experiencing VERY steep inclines, HEAVY G forces, and casually diving toward the Earth.

I assumed these planes needed to be specially designed and reinforced to pull this off.

It turns out… I was wrong. Follow along to find out more!

What’s really inside the Earth?

The deepest hole anyone has ever dug is only 0.2% of the way to the Earth’s center. But then….how do we know that our Earth has a solid core?!?

For a long time we thought the entire inside was molten, until a scientist looked at how ripples from earthquakes – seismic waves – bounced around inside the earth.

Now we know we have a solid inner core that rotates at a different rate than on the surface, and right now it’s slowing down!

To find out why, follow along!

Why are these 5,000 basketball-sized spheres deep under the ice in Antarctica?

It’s an observatory all the way down at the bottom of the world. It spans over a cubic kilometer in size and involves drilling 2500m below the surface.

It was a massive undertaking requiring tons of resources... so how did they do it?

There’s a secret network under your feet.

If you dug a hole in your nearest forest between the tree roots you would see. A giant web of fungi…so big that if you took what’s in just the top layer of the Earth and spread it out…

It would be nearly as long as half the Milky Way Galaxy! And trees use this network to talk to one another…but what are they saying!?

There’s antimatter in this truck!!

And if matter meets antimatter…it goes BOOM!

We’ve figured out how to make and store antimatter, but they’re super delicate atoms, so to study them we need a super quiet environment that requires moving them!

So scientists built a special trap in order to transport antimatter…

Dark energy is getting weaker?

This new map shows dark energy might be getting weaker. That’s odd.

Every dot you see here is either a galaxy or a special kind of black hole, and there are 47 million in this new 3D map of our universe.

It’s uprooting what we thought we knew about dark energy and implying our universe might be headed toward a very different ending than we thought…

They found a mysterious shadow in the ocean.

During World War II Navy sailors noticed something weird on their sonar. As it echoed down into the depths... a mysterious shadow pinged back.

It was as large as the seafloor itself but it didn’t make any sense because it was only a couple hundred feet below them.

Conspiracy theories sprung up, but during the war, there was no time to investigate further. Years later, we found out it wasn’t a threat but some vital natural “engineering” keeping our planet healthy.
