Everyone knows and loves Boston’s Italian deli sandwiches but I recently discovered a place to get hot subs that makes all the other places look like Jersey mikes it’s a tiny pop up operation out of a long-standing industry favorite pizza joint in Fort Point (which, despite its proximity to seaport has a completely different feel) The @thesubshopatpastoral is owned by a quiet, pretty regular looking white dude, glasses and all, who happens to be dating (married to?) a Vietnamese girl and when you see this kinda couple you immediately think oxford study but in this case it’s nothing racially motivated at all it’s but culinarily motivated it’s just a dude who makes bomb sandwiches and a girl who loves them. Being in a pizza shop, their dough game is insane with the most incredible, not too hard not too soft, delightfully chewy sesame seed bread baked to perfection and filled with all types of mouth watering savory goodness. The rib eye steak and cheese is my fav by far it’s just unbelievable flavorful and tender but I can also stand firmly behind the spicy Calabrian chicken and classic turkey. Interracial relationships are common in boston but what isn’t common is finding a restaurant with bomb food and drinks but also feels like a real neighborhood spot like somewhere everyone knows each others names and everyone’s yelling across the room at each other which is why I was pumped to find this Italian place in Winthrop wherever that is I met Joe at one of his pop ups and he’s a crazy dude a real high energy passionate guy who loves getting creative with cocktails and intimate with his lovely gf (edit: they’re actually MARRIED!) which is why he created his Ode to Seoul menu which combines spirits from his family’s Italian restaurant with flavors and memories of their recent couples trip to Korea. Anyway @mammamariaboston is always changing their menu so you never know what you might get but I’ve been several times and it’s always been amazing. Super fresh, super comforting and the space is a weird mix of elegant and homey. This time we tried some new seafood apps like the featured tuna cannoli and grilled shrimp, both with incredible savory garlicky herbal sauces and the tagliatelle bolognese and scallop risotto for mains. Tagliatelle bolognese is kinda a basic dish and I was hesitant to order it because sometimes I go for something simple and it’s executed poorly and then I feel sad and disappointed bc I could have just made it myself but I’m glad I did this time bc this thing was incredible. And I also love how this place is it’s a classic family-owned North End establishment. The North End has so much character and tradition that I’d be sad if places like this shut down. That’s why I was happy to see that the daughter of the family and manager of the restaurant, Phoebe, recently took over a long-standing gift shop right next door, continuing the legacy of family-run small businesses in the neighborhood. She’s keeping a lot of the classic local Boston stuff but also making it more modern by highlighting young local artists for clothing and stocking weird New England items like the lobster lip balm. Lots of interracial couples at this Korean tapas bar in Brookline right by Boston University campus and back when I was at BU the only option for good Korean drinks and food was MD but this place is like MD’s hot cousin who has her life together a little bit more. Big Frank & I went to Chinatown where we met up with my buddy @chopstickmurphys for some of the best hot pot in the city! Chopstick & Big Frank never met before, chopstick was star struck at first 😂. Big Frank never had hot pot before either, and he was pretty struck by it as well. Mikiya offers Wagyu from Japan, Australia & the US. Their menu is all you can eat. If you do the diamond like we did, you’d get all the Wagyu & seafood you can eat until your heart gives out. If you know me, I’m not a big Wagyu guy. It’s too rich. But, when you dunk it in a sauce, or in this case, broth, it masks the richness and makes it better (in my opinion). The Japanese wagyu was still a bit rich. I really loved the Australian. The sukiyaki broth was out of this world. Big Frank has been dying to go back to get more. I was impressed at how much he loved it here. Thank you to Chopstick for a great night out. Big Frank & I went to Chinatown where we met up with my buddy @chopstickmurphys for some of the best hot pot in the city! Chopstick & Big Frank never met before, chopstick was star struck at first 😂. Big Frank never had hot pot before either, and he was pretty struck by it as well. Mikiya offers Wagyu from Japan, Australia & the US. Their menu is all you can eat. If you do the diamond like we did, you’d get all the Wagyu & seafood you can eat until your heart gives out. If you know me, I’m not a big Wagyu guy. It’s too rich. But, when you dunk it in a sauce, or in this case, broth, it masks the richness and makes it better (in my opinion). The Japanese wagyu was still a bit rich. I really loved the Australian. This new boston seafood restaurant is Asian owned with white chefs who were Asian-trained and the Asian is married to a white lady. It’s all very interracial. Which may or may not upset you. im all for it. Honestly it’s too hot out to care about things like that. When the suns out and it’s 90 out I’m just tryna take off my shirt and eat lobster and clams by the beach. Unfortunately there’s no beach around here except bu beach but there is Blanchards right next door which is nice. Anyway this is probably my new fav seafood restaurant in boston. Very high quality product and some interesting culinary flexes like yellowtail crudo with smoked olive oil and grapefruit ponzu. Which is great and all but just give me my whole belly clams. Oh they also now have a smashburger that looks really good pull up #boston #bostonfoodies

The boston cream espresso martini has been a topic of many a viral video and it is transcendent (not too sweet, no creaminess despite the name, I hate baileys in espresso martinis) but I gotta say I much prefer the other cocktails particularly the middle eastern inspired ones. There’s the Jallab which is based on an interesting floral, fruity middle eastern beverage and the peach and honey which is just so refreshing on a hot summer day. The food menu has bright spots as well. Of course the labneh, that should be locked in to every order every time, but the muhamarra and lamb chops are very nice too. Less impressed with the more basic dishes. Chicken schnitzel and skewers for example were somewhat dry when I went. Overall as far as seaport restaurants this one is up there for me. Definitely keeping it in the rotation. Speaking of which dm me anytime for the current full rotation . . #boston #bostonfood

It goes without saying but some of the best food in boston isn’t in boston like the other day I was in Braintree for some reason and came across this bbq place at the mall of all places and bbq isn’t a cuisine boston is really known for in fact ppl generally agree we are actually really bad at it so I had low hopes but turns out it was actually quite good I spoke to the owner and he went through great pains to make his bbq as close as possible to Texas bbq, specifically Terry Blacks in Dallas, like importing native Texan post oak wood and using the secret smoke-and-rest method he learned down there. Overall it really paid off bc the ribs and brisket were some of the best I’ve had up here. . . #boston #bostonfood #bostonfoodies

There’s several breeds of bartender that if you see behind a bar you know your drink is bout to be fire and one of them is the lean hot Asian dude with nice hair and semi feminine fashion choices and a lot of thrifted silver rings who makes you think damn this dude gotta be adopted and if not he def doesn’t still talk to his parents bc any interaction will def end in some wild homophobic outbursts and maybe even light beatdowns which is pretty sad for all parties involved except you bc these types of traumatic family relationships usually lead to a lot of solo drinking and with Asian ppls innate drive for perfectionism you know this dude made himself the best solo drinks in his day and now does it professionally for you to enjoy Anyway I found one of these specimens at @darlingcambridge a new cocktail bar in Cambridge that serves drinks with classic asian ingredients like condensed milk and msg and dimsum on the side . . . #boston #bostonfood #bostonbar #cocktails #bartender #comedy #asianparents

Anyway I was skeptical after hearing all this feedback but the samgyetang is undeniably delicious and includes a whole chicken stuffed with rice and seasoned delicately with ginseng, jujube, and pepper. Mild sweetness, very savory, and extremely rich. Boston needs more food trucks and once they have them someone needs to tell me where they’re at because there’s something about getting a nice warm lunch handed to you at a downward angle from a friendly immigrant worker on a bright summer day that makes me feel like Boston is a fun place to live. One such food truck is Chicken and Rice Guys, an OG at this point in the Boston fast casual food scene. It’s pretty much as it sounds. Chicken over rice or lamb over rice. With some scattered vegetables (I’d highly recommend adding extra cucumber tomato salad) and pita and some delicious sauces. We had a couple of bottles of wine for the table and while wine is the least lit of all beverage options it was still good to see that Boston people still be drinking. Anyway I feel like I don’t need to say this but the food here is insanely good. It’s brought to you by this handsome Thai dude named Pao @paorer and this beautiful Thai lady named Kam, both of which have close ties to Boston Thai favorites Mahaniyom and Merai. Every dinner is different, with each “episode” having a different theme or angle to showcase a different side of Thai cuisine. But the most special thing about this supper club is the format. Super intimate, with only 10-20 guests at a big table in a cozy living room. Pao’s cats sitting one room over. The smells and sounds of delicious Thai cooking wafting over from his kitchen. With many of the guests long-time regulars, it just feels like a hang with a bunch of friends.
