The contrast between Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu’s own vibe and the role that has made her a superstar is quite disconcerting – and to Philippine herself, it seems. “It’s so crazy,” she says. “I never really identified with the French. I knew I had French stuff in me, but I couldn’t really recognise it. And then suddenly, Sylvie became this iconic Frenchwoman! I was like, ‘Oh, my God, that’s so strange, that I’m to play that!’” She describes herself as “a mix of my Italian upbringing, my French culture, my Anglo-Saxon friendships and my love for Brazil. I’m not a pure Parisian product at all.” Perhaps only an outsider could create such an acutely observed portrait? “Yeah, exactly – you need the distance to be able to embody that. That’s why I have so much fun with the character. By the time that I’d finished doing press on our opening night party, the bar had already closed, so I ended up getting Chinese food and going home to talk to my mom. So it’s nice to actually get to celebrate this part, and be in a room with so many talented individuals who have made London theatre great this season. At her kitchen table one day during lockdown, she was looking at a Farrow & Ball paint chart and she realised that the catalogue of rectangular colour swatches, or chips as they’re known, was like ‘a collection of tiny walls, already prepped and ready for me to tell stories on’. So, she whipped out her smallest brush and a tube of acrylic, painted a chip with a koi carp and was off. The artist has spent this year in Bazaar’s archives for a special collaboration and commission that will see her create an original artwork that draws on more than 150 years of ideas, imagery and attitude. Three hundred editions will be available from 8 October. We will reveal the work, titled ‘Shades of Flat and Lustre Finishes’ (40cm x 66cm), in thirds over three issues, starting with the September issue - limited edition prints of which will go on sale in October. The 72 chips represent 72 opportunities for Spelling to explore themes that the magazine holds dear and that chime with her. ‘I want to depict the dreamspace of the Bazaar woman – the competing and sometimes contrasting thoughts, expectations, hopes, dreams and regrets that hover invisibly around a beautiful shoe, a manicured hand or a yellow hat,’ she says.
