I’ve turned down opportunities like this before. Not because I didn’t have anything to say. Because I was scared shitless to say it on a stage. Since I was a kid, I’ve always been the class clown, the group leader, the guy who can talk for hours one-on-one. Put me in a room with a client and I’m completely comfortable. Put me on a stage with 100+ people staring at me? I’d run for the hills. Maybe it’s just the way my brain works. I’ve got about 15 voices going at once, and the thought of having to organize all of that, articulate it perfectly, remember what comes next and do it with every eye in the room on me has always terrified me. Enough that over the years, I’ve turned down several opportunities to give keynote speeches because of one stupid thought: What if I go completely blank? Then this opportunity came along. A keynote in front of a companies top 100+ stylists, followed by four 90-minute breakout sessions. Maybe it was the timing. Maybe I was finally tired of letting something I was afraid of make decisions for me. I just remember thinking: Fuck it. I’m doing this. And I did. The funny thing is, I went there thinking I was going to teach. I walked away realizing how much the experience taught me. Spending that time sharing the things I’ve learned over 15 years, building relationships, earning trust, selling, failing, figuring shit out, building a brand and creating a career in this industry.. forced me to look back at my own journey in a way I hadn’t in a long time. It reminded me where I started. It reminded me how far I’ve come. And maybe most importantly, it reminded me how far I still want to go. I’m not going to pretend I suddenly love public speaking or that the fear magically disappeared. I just finally stopped letting the fear win. And there’s something pretty damn empowering about realizing that the thing you’ve avoided for years isn’t nearly as scary once you finally walk straight toward it.
