Earlier in the match, Egypt's coach Hossam Hassan had made FIFA's official anti-racism gesture directly in front of referee François Letexier. Under FIFA rules, the "X" signal should trigger a temporary stoppage, then suspension, then abandonment of the match if abuse continues.
None of those steps were taken. Letexier gave Hassan a yellow card for dissent instead.

He was 23 years old.
These are his final words, which he prepared in the event of his death.
“Each day was a battle for survival ... yet I never left my people’s side.”
Hossam was among at least 5 Al Jazeera journalists killed by Israel’s attacks on 2025, including: Anas al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal.
As of December 2025, Israel’s assault on Gaza had killed at least 260 Palestinian journalists and media workers in Gaza. It has been responsible for two thirds of all journalist killings worldwide in both 2024 and 2025.
