Earlier in the match, Egypt's coach Hossam Hassan had made FIFA's official anti-racism gesture directly in front of referee François Letexier. Under FIFA rules, the "X" signal should trigger a temporary stoppage, then suspension, then abandonment of the match if abuse continues.
None of those steps were taken. Letexier gave Hassan a yellow card for dissent instead.

As of December 2025, Israel’s assault on Gaza had killed at least 260 Palestinian journalists and media workers in Gaza. It has been responsible for two thirds of all journalist killings worldwide in both 2024 and 2025.
