🖤 Rest in peace, David Allan Coe 🥃
(Sep 6, 1939 - Apr 29, 2026)

🎥 @acltv Austin City Limits - 1984

The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy has ridden off into that honky tonk in the sky. Outlaw country legend David Allan Coe passed away on April 29, 2026, at the age of 86.

He drove a hearse to Nashville, parked it outside the Ryman, and dared the world to ignore him. It never could.

He wrote “Take This Job and Shove It” for Johnny Paycheck. He wrote “Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone)” for Tanya Tucker. He gave us “You Never Even Called Me by My Name,” the self-proclaimed perfect country and western song. He haunted us with “The Ride.” He was wild, complicated, and utterly one of a kind.

His widow Kimberly said it best: “One of the best singers, songwriters, and performers of our time, never to be forgotten.”

Ride on, cowboy.

We’d like to share with you the song we made for the finale of our Austin City Limits set. The set was a tribute to ACL TV and we scoured through footage from as many past episodes as we could find to put this together. This song features bits from some classic old episodes including willie nelson, dolly parton, fats domino, stevie ray vaughn, guy clark, sheryl crow, neil young, and more. Since not everyone could be there and we can’t really imagine playing it again we thought we’d let you guys hear it. 📺 full song on youtube

Sad news that Augie Meyers, organ player and singer with the Sir Douglas Quintet and the Texas Tornados, has died at the age of 85. Augie appeared on Austin City Limits five times, including ACL’s historic Season 1 in 1976.
As keyboardist for the Sir Douglas Quintet, Augie helped to create a singular sound with his organ fills that added a Tex-Mex spice to the band’s rock and roll. He recorded with a number of contemporaries including Bob Dylan, Tom Jones and John Hammond and his solo “Hey Baby Que Paso” was a regional hit. Late in his career Augie co-founded the Texas Tornados, a roots music supergroup with Doug Sahm, Freddy Fender and Flaco Jimenez. Augie’s appearances on Austin City Limits with the Sir Douglas Quintet and the Texas Tornados are highlights from our 51-year history. RIP Augie Meyers, a true Texas legend.

While we never did have the Prince of Darkness on the Austin City Limits stage, his influence across heavy metal and rock helped define an era of music. We felt this cover of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” by @flaminglips and @catpowerofficial from Season 30 (2004-2005) was a fitting tribute. Rest well, Ozzy🖤

We here at Austin City Limits are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Mavericks singer and songwriter Raul Malo.
His family announced Tuesday morning he’d lost his battle with cancer. Malo appeared on Austin City Limits with The Mavericks three times (1995, 2000 and 2020), including a stunning Season 46 taping in support of their album “En Español,” the first album ever to debut at the top of both the Latin Pop and Folk-Americana charts. His final appearance was leading the Mavericks through a powerhouse performance of “All You Ever Do is Bring Me Down” for our half-century celebration Austin City Limits Celebrates 50 Years.
Raul Malo’s exuberant onstage energy and remarkable talent earned him a spot in our firmament of ACL favorites. He was also a kind and uplifting human being and will be greatly missed by all of us here at ACL.

We’re deeply saddened by the passing of Todd Snider, who graced the Austin City Limits stage in Season 21 back in 1996.
A gifted storyteller with a fearless spirit and a songwriter’s heart, Todd brought humor, honesty, and humanity to every lyric. His music left a mark on the ACL stage and on everyone who heard him.
Our love goes out to his family, friends, and fans. His songs and stories will continue to live on.
