I touched on this in Part 1 of my “things I’d tell you as a Trichologist if I wasn’t afraid to hurt your feelings” series and saw a lot of questions about it so I figured it was worth the deep dive! These hot styling air brush tools (think Dyson Air Wrap, Shark Flex Style, Shark Flex Fusion and Revlon One Step Styler) truly hack the styling process and are SO helpful for saving time, but they can also be the culprit of serious damage and breakage if you don’t use them carefully. Since taking my trichology course… I haven’t been able to look at scalp health the same way again. You just cannot convince me that the before is the more optimal environment for healthy hair growth than the after. And while proper cleansing isn’t the only reason my hair has grown long and healthy (my repair-focused routine has been crucial), it just shows that washing often will not only NOT prevent your hair from growing like so many people suggest, but it will help your hair thrive! #shampoo #hairtransformation #hairjourney

Shampoos like this (like from the drugstore or with sulfates & other deep cleaning ingredients) will not ruin your hair, make your hair fall out in clumps, or cause severe damage. They’re not toxic, filled with wax, watered down, or delivering fake / temporary results. They will properly clean your scalp, allowing your hair to thrive! I don’t care which shampoos the internet decides to hate… I care which shampoos have ingredients proven to fight the fungus & inflammation that make our scalps itchy, uncomfortable, scaly and flaky. I always had this *spot* on my scalp that was super itchy and I tried a lot of things to help it over the years- tea tree oil WAY back in the day (nightmare fuel don’t do this), salicylic acid exfoliants (helped! but didn’t fully get rid of the issue)- but it wasn’t until I looked at it under a microscope that I realized how truly inflamed and scaly that area was… And honestly those pictures aren’t even the worst of it but I don’t want my video to get taken down for showing 🩸. Spots like this can be super stubborn to treat but shampoos like Head & Shoulders and Nizoral were specifically formulated to help with it… And after consistently using them on that area, it finally cleared! So that’s why I will never stop recommending medicated shampoos like this. I don’t care which shampoos the internet decides to hate… I care which shampoos have ingredients proven to fight the fungus & inflammation that make our scalps itchy, uncomfortable, scaly and flaky. I always had this *spot* on my scalp that was super itchy and I tried a lot of things to help it over the years- tea tree oil WAY back in the day (nightmare fuel don’t do this), salicylic acid exfoliants (helped! but didn’t fully get rid of the issue)- but it wasn’t until I looked at it under a microscope that I realized how truly inflamed and scaly that area was… And honestly those pictures aren’t even the worst of it but I don’t want my video to get taken down for showing 🩸. When I first saw this video about K18 at Costco & K18’s comment on that video, I knew I had to dig into this further. I’ve been asked whether or not high end products like K18 are real if they’re found at Costco or Sam’s Club before, so I reached out to K18 for comment. They told me that “Costco, Sam’s Club, TJ Maxx, etc. are not authorized to sell K18” & because of that, K18 “cannot guarantee the efficacy of any products purchased through non authorized retailers as we cannot guarantee the product is authentic and has not been tampered with.” It turns out this is called diversion, and it’s really common in the haircare industry. So I tried to figure out as much as I can about it (like the difference between diverted product and counterfeit product), and shared what I found in a YouTube video. At the time, I wasn’t able to find any K18 in my local Costco or on Costco’s website, so I couldn’t include that POV in my video. But since posting it, I found it on Costco’s website! I wanted to buy it to see if I could tell any difference in the packaging, smell, texture, etc. compared to K18 I already have, and after “swatching” both like this… I really can’t. I still need to play around with them in the shower so my thoughts might change after that, but as of now, it seems like the real deal to me. There are still some potential risks in buying diverted product & I cover this in depth in my YouTube video (in addition to how unauthorized retailers get these products in the first place)- it’s way too much info to include in a short video here. But I wanted to share this update for those of you that like to buy products like this when they pop up in stores like Costco! Ultimately you have to make the best decision for you, and my hope is to provide you with as much information as possible to make that decision! I’ve been asked if these OGX oils have heat protection many times… and I had a hunch that they did… but I never saw that claim listed anywhere so I assumed they hadn’t been tested for that claim. But I just found out that the Coconut Miracle Oil, Argan Oil of Morocco Oil, & Argan Oil of Morocco Extra Penetrating Oil all protect from up to 450° of heat!! I don’t use oil as my sole source of heat protection, but I I know a lot of you love putting oil on wet hair and I also love the idea of having extra protection in my hair for heat styling between washes. My hair blow dries naturally straight but it can absolutely gets poofy & frizzy in humid weather without humidity protection- so this was so cool to see how well these work in real time! My hair blow dries naturally straight but it can absolutely gets poofy & frizzy in humid weather without humidity protection- so this was so cool to see how well these work in real time! I have seen many comments about the Pantene Sheer Volume Shampoo making people’s hair feel “waxy” because of all the “silicone buildup” from it, so I wanted to explain what I think is going on here. This shampoo is not only free from silicones, but it’s also free from waxes, fatty alcohols, oils, and really anything else that conditions our hair like those kinds of ingredients do. Because of this, it provides a true deep clean that not only removes buildup, but also doesn’t add any in the way that other shampoos can either. Using a shampoo with conditioning ingredients isn’t bad- many of my favorites have silicones, oils etc. But if you’re used to only using those kinds of shampoos, especially if they are also the kind that only contain super gentle cleansing agents (these exploded in popularity over the last several years so it’s common), you’re going to experience very different results than you’re used to. That’s why I’ve always said this shampoo makes my hair feel squeaky clean- it’s not wax that you’re feeling, it’s truly clean hair! I think this is why Pantene originally marketed this as a volume shampoo… because it’s removing all that buildup that can make your hair feel heavy and weighed down. I’m a huge proponent of using a deep cleaning shampoo once a week (or more if needed) to get this thorough, buildup removing cleanse because it’s not only good for your scalp, but it can also help you get better results with the rest of your routine (like by allowing your bond repair products to penetrate better for example). BUT I totally get that this one is an extra deep clean and not for everyone. If you don’t love it, check out part 3 of my Abbey Yung Method series.
