89 Years of Conservation: Eighty-nine years ago today, conservation was transformed by the founding of Ducks Unlimited.

In 1937, a small group of waterfowlers, visionaries, and community leaders set out to save North America's waterfowl populations while celebrating the continent's solid waterfowling heritage. Stressing the critical role wetlands play across North America, DU committed to this mission at the height of the Great Depression and one of the worst droughts in history.

Never underestimate what a group of passionate people can accomplish together for the special places left on earth. We're making a continental impact, just as our founders envisioned nearly 90 years ago. Through your support and the tireless efforts of our other members, volunteers, and partners, DU has protected or restored more than 19 million acres . . . and counting.

On behalf of Team DU, we say—Happy Anniversary, Ducks Unlimited!

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is reviewing a rule that helps ensure voluntary National Wildlife Refuge System wetland easements in the Prairie Pothole Region are not drained or degraded. For more than 60 years, administrations of both parties have upheld these voluntary easement agreements, protecting habitat that Americans have already paid to conserve.

The Prairie Pothole Region is the "Duck Factory" of North America, producing more than half of the continent's migratory waterfowl and sustaining the hunting traditions we all cherish. For generations, duck hunters, anglers, and conservationists have invested billions of dollars through Duck Stamps, hunting licenses, and other conservation programs to protect these vital wetlands.

The current rule is working. It protects critical waterfowl habitat, provides certainty for landowners through science-based setback plans, and preserves the integrity of conservation easements that have delivered enormous benefits for wildlife and hunters alike.

Weakening these protections could open the door to the drainage of federally protected wetlands at a time when waterfowl populations are already under pressure and hunting opportunities face increasing challenges.

The stakes are simple: No wetlands. No waterfowl. No hunting heritage.

Please join Ducks Unlimited in urging the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to maintain this proven rule and uphold more than six decades of conservation success. Click the link below to submit your personalized comment to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Thank you to @RepDavidKustoff for standing up for duck hunters and rallying your colleagues to do the same. We appreciate all of our friends in Congress who joined this effort to protect the Duck Factory. Your support will ensure the continued protection of habitat that sustains more than half of our nation’s waterfowl population, and every duck hunter in America should be grateful.

Thank you @SecretaryBurgum. Giving people more places to hunt, fish, and create lasting memories ensures these traditions remain strong for future generations. Thank you to @Interior and @USFWS for expanding access to America’s vast public lands, and for prioritizing America’s sportsmen and women.

Ducks Unlimited mourns the tragic passing of @USFWS federal wildlife officer David Taylor, who rushed into a burning structure to help residents evacuate from the Railroad South Fire. Officer Taylor’s final moments were spent going door to door alongside emergency personnel helping residents get to safety. Putting himself in danger to help others escape it. His actions were selfless and courageous, and his sacrifice was heroic. We offer our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and fellow officers.

“Healthy grazing lands are essential to a healthy landscape. The RANCH Act recognizes the conservation value of these grazing lands while helping address the need for additional grazing. This legislation helps ranchers restore marginal cropland to perennial cover and managed grazing. Ducks Unlimited supports voluntary, rancher-driven solutions that improve habitat, soil and water quality while keeping ranchers on the land for generations to come.” -Ryan Taylor, DU Director of Public Policy
