Wildlife filmmaker Carlos Gauna and UC Riverside biology researcher Phillip Sternes were flying a drone off Santa Barbara, California, when they spotted something unusual: a small great white, about 5 ft long, that was almost pure white. Adult great whites are grey on top and white underneath. When the team slowed the footage down, they saw a thin white layer peeling off the shark’s body as it swam. They believe it was a newborn shedding its embryonic layer, possibly only hours or days old. No one has ever confirmed seeing a live newborn great white in the wild, and scientists still don’t know where these sharks give birth. The pair published their findings in the journal Environmental Biology of Fishes. They note that a skin condition could also explain the white film, but the shark’s size, appearance and timing all point to a newborn pup. If they’re right, this stretch of the California coast could be a great white birthing ground. Finding out where these sharks are born is a big step toward protecting the places they need most.
