We need to talk about the most insane running race that just happened in Tennessee 👇 Nobody finished the race for the 2nd straight year. Very fitting, as it’s known as “The Race That Eats It’s Young”. This is the Barkley Marathons. It started back in the 80’s and only 20 people have ever finished it. Made by Gary Cantrell, also known as Lazarus Lake. The course is a 20 mile loop through Frozen Head State Park in Tennessee, and you do 5 laps for 100 miles. But the 100 miles, isn’t even the crazy part… To apply, you have to write a letter to Lazarus on why you should be allowed in. If accepted, your entry fee is a license plate from your home state. But if you’re a past finisher, your entry fee is a pack of cigs for Lazarus. They assign bib #1 to the person least likely to finish the first lap, and they are known as ”The Human Sacrifice”. To signal the start of the race, Lazarus lights his cigarette and begins smoking. The 100 mile race has 54,000 feet of elevation gain. The course is unmarked and you can only navigate from notes. Along the track, you have to find books and rip out a page to prove you completed the lap. When someone drops out, a bugler plays “Taps”, which is the sound the military plays to signal lights out. The list of crazy things goes on and on. Just an insane race, and I question the sanity of the 20 people who have completed this.

This is hands down the coolest 5k in the country, and it’s run exactly like an F1 race 👇 So this is the Bandit Grand Prix, hosted by @Bandit Running. But this is nothing like your local charity 5K. They run the whole thing like an actual F1 Grand Prix. During the day, you’ve got 5K races that work as qualifying heats. The top finishers move on to a 3K Super Final at night. People are complaining that it’s not inclusive and it alienates walkers. Now, the ad isn’t great, but not for the reason people are complaining. So you first need to know the context. The sign is at the Boston Marathon, one of the hardest marathons to qualify for. It is for the elite of the elite runners. It’s simply not a race for walkers, there is just no debate with that. The objective by Nike was to celebrate this, and push ambitious, high-performance messaging. Which I totally agree with for Boston. Would this messaging work at your local 5K Turkey Trot? No, but that’s the point - It’s for the Boston Marathon. The ad could probably have better copy for the goal Nike had in mind. But at the end of the day, the messaging of the ad should not be controversial. And honestly, I would respect Nike much more if they brought the sign back today but with even more hardcore messaging. Maybe "Runners Welcome. Walkers Banned."

People are complaining that it’s not inclusive and it alienates walkers. Now, the ad isn’t great, but not for the reason people are complaining. So you first need to know the context. The sign is at the Boston Marathon, one of the hardest marathons to qualify for. It is for the elite of the elite runners. It’s simply not a race for walkers, there is just no debate with that. The coolest half marathon just happened in New York 👇 This is The Bakery Run. 17,000 people applied for this race, only 100 people were selected. But the format is what makes it so unique. And shoutout to Tipster, @banditrunning and @Salomon for putting this on. So it’s a half marathon race and you stop at 8 bakeries along the way for free pastries. Some of the best and most well known bakeries in New York. My personal favorites: - Raf’s had the best sweet pastry. - L'Appartement 4F had the best savory pastry. But the best part, this was different than other running events. It didn’t have the intense race feeling. It was more about having fun, meeting people, and eating good food. It took the focus off the running, and I thought that was the appealing part. People are seeking wellness and community events. But so many are intense and intimidating. And The Bakery Run balanced fun and fitness perfectly. We need more events like this.
