Starting in 2019, teenagers began showing up at clinics with identical Tourette's-like symptoms. They were shouting the same phrases and showing similar physical tics. It traced back to a single YouTuber who was apparently exaggerating his symptoms for the algorithm. The lead psychiatrist who studied this told me these patients weren't faking it; their brains were misfiring in response to what they watched, because social media doesn't just spread information, it spreads symptoms. They had what she called a “functional neurological disorder,” but many were cured when it was explained to them. Some others needed more extended therapy.
