48 days until we tip off against Tulane to start my D2 season, and I’m more locked in than ever. 🏀 There was a season where I averaged 2 points a game and spent most of it sitting on the bench wondering if my moment was ever going to come. Through all of it I heard everything, too small, too slow, not enough for this level. But God kept putting the right people in my path who saw something in me that I was still learning to see in myself, and that’s the only reason I’m standing where I am today. I step on the court everyday knowing that the same God who took a kid from Mexico and brought him to Memphis, then Mississippi, and now Alabama isn’t finished writing this story yet. Being the only Latino on the court has pushed me more than anything else in my career, but at times it’s also been the loneliest part of it. I moved from Mexico to Mississippi at 14 with my family, and I made sure to bring the only game I ever loved with me. Problem is Mexico is a soccer country, so almost every resource goes to soccer and very little goes to basketball. That meant I showed up already behind on speed, IQ, and everything the guys around me had been doing their whole lives. It was hard to relate to my teammates too. Different country, different language, different reason I fell in love with this game. And on top of all that, I learned respect is hard to earn as an undersized Latino, because people look at me and don’t expect me to be good at what I do. Now I’m playing D2 basketball. Feeling like an outsider never broke me. It just made me work three times harder, and that’s the only reason I’m here. So if you feel like an outsider in your sport, whoever you are and whatever you play, don’t quit. Let the work speak before you do. #latinoathlete #collegeathlete #basketball #hoops #mexico
