In December 2014, UAB football was gone. Not struggling. Not rebuilding. Not taking a year off. Gone. The university announced it was shutting down the football program just days after the Blazers finished 6-6 and became bowl eligible for the first time in a decade. But Birmingham refused to let that be the ending. 💚🐉 After an enormous outpouring from players, fans, alumni and the community, UAB announced just six months later that football would return. The Blazers sat out the 2015 and 2016 seasons, rebuilt an entire roster, and finally took the field again in 2017 — 1,007 days after their previous game. And the comeback was almost immediate. UAB went 8-5 in its first season back, then won Conference USA championships in 2018 and 2020. Now, nearly 12 years after the school announced the program was dead, UAB is opening another college football season this week. A program that was literally shut down is still here, still playing, and still writing new chapters. Sometimes college football really is bigger than football. 💚🏈

Major Wright delivered one of the most violent and memorable hits in college football history on one of the biggest stages possible. Just three plays into the 2009 BCS National Championship Game, Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford went deep for Manny Johnson, and Wright came flying across the field and absolutely leveled Johnson the moment the ball arrived, breaking up the pass. Wright later admitted even he was shocked by how hard the hit was, remembering thinking, “Wow, did I just do that?” The play immediately set the tone for Florida’s defense against an Oklahoma offense that had been putting up ridiculous numbers all season. Wright wasn’t finished either, later intercepting Bradford near the goal line just before halftime and finishing the game with nine tackles.
