Have you heard? An Israeli flag outside Temple Sinai of Bergen County in Tenafly was burned in the early hours of Tuesday, Sept. 16, in what synagogue leaders and police described as a targeted act of vandalism. The American and Jewish Pride flags alongside it were left untouched. Tenafly police are investigating, and the temple’s private security is on high alert, especially as the Jewish High Holy Days begin Sept. 22. Mayor Mark Zinna condemned the incident, calling it “foolish antisemitism,” and urged more cameras and flags in response. Rabbi Jordan Millstein, who has led Temple Sinai for 17 years, said the attack was clearly aimed at the Jewish community: “It was burned in place in a clear act of vandalism… We will not be intimidated.” A replacement Israeli flag will be raised, he added. The incident comes amid persistently high levels of antisemitism in New Jersey. The ADL reported 719 antisemitic incidents statewide in 2023, the second-highest annual total ever. Local Jewish leaders, including Jason Shames of the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey, warned that unchecked intimidation is fueling a surge in hate crimes. The lawsuit, filed last month in state Superior Court by David Lorenzo, a Clauss Avenue resident, names the Paramus Planning Board and Costco as defendants. Lorenzo claims nearby property owners were not properly notified as required by law and alleges the board failed to adequately evaluate potential impacts on the surrounding community before approving zoning variances. The complaint argues the board’s decision was “arbitrary, capricious and unreasonable” and asks the court to overturn the approvals and require the defendants to pay legal costs. During public hearings, residents raised concerns about traffic congestion and insufficient buffers between the store and nearby homes. In response, Costco agreed to install an additional 8-foot-tall fence on a slope to better shield neighboring properties. If built, the Paramus location would be Costco’s 21st retail store in New Jersey. The company already operates North Jersey locations in Teterboro, Wayne, Clifton, and East Hanover, as well as a business center in Hackensack.
