What are your thoughts? The proposed project would replace a vacant former Stop & Shop, Kmart, and strip mall on Route 17 South with a 184,000-square-foot Costco. The development was approved in October after more than eight months of Planning Board hearings. The lawsuit, filed last month in state Superior Court by David Lorenzo, a Clauss Avenue resident, names the Paramus Planning Board and Costco as defendants. Lorenzo claims nearby property owners were not properly notified as required by law and alleges the board failed to adequately evaluate potential impacts on the surrounding community before approving zoning variances. The complaint argues the board’s decision was “arbitrary, capricious and unreasonable” and asks the court to overturn the approvals and require the defendants to pay legal costs. During public hearings, residents raised concerns about traffic congestion and insufficient buffers between the store and nearby homes. In response, Costco agreed to install an additional 8-foot-tall fence on a slope to better shield neighboring properties. If built, the Paramus location would be Costco’s 21st retail store in New Jersey.
