We’re deeply saddened to share that Fauja Singh, a beloved Toronto Waterfront Marathon legend, has passed away in Punjab.
Fauja’s impact on our event, and the global running world, is immeasurable. Alongside Ed Whitlock, he helped elevate our race to the international stage. Their 2003 performances were featured on the cover of Runner’s World:
“A Day for the Ages: New World Records in Berlin and Toronto!”
In 2011, Fauja made history as the first centenarian to complete a marathon, finishing TWM in 8:11 at age 100 and inspiring the entire city. The next day, Q107’s John Derringer joked that we were all “Tool of the Day” compared to Fauja.
But beyond his records, Fauja was a kind, humble man who brought joy and wisdom to every visit — from gurdwaras to youth groups, always with a story (and a ginger curry tip!) to share.
He will always be remembered for the inspiration and warmth he brought to our community.
We’ll honour his life at TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon 2025, stay tuned for more. 🕊️🤍
