After more than two decades of development, the Grand Egyptian Museum — aligned perfectly to the Great Pyramids — has officially opened on Egypt’s Giza Plateau.
Designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, the huge complex brings together over 100,000 artefacts, including the complete Tutankhamun collection displayed in one place for the first time. The museum’s centrepiece, the Grand Staircase, rises through the structure’s halls and is lined with ancient statues, framing views of the pyramids beyond.
Easily one of the most significant museum openings of this century, the building is likely to redefine how the world experiences one of history’s greatest civilisations.

Belgium’s long-awaited Gare de Mons is (finally) open. Designed by Santiago Calatrava (@calatravaofficial), the $374M structure is intended to act as a ‘monumental bridge’ stretching for 160-metres over the station platforms and connecting Mons’ historic centre with new urban developments to the south.
The project was first unveiled 19 years ago in 2006, but has been plagued by budget overruns and delays. Construction works eventually started in 2013 but the station’s original 2015 completion date then went on to slip by a decade to 2025.
The design’s white ribs has echoes of The Oculus at New York’s World Trade Center, which was also designed by Calatrava.

From render to reality. This week marks the opening of Cambodia’s Techo International Airport. Designed by @fosterandpartners, the airport sits 20-kilometres south of Phnom Penh and has the capacity to welcome 13 million passengers a year. The planned phase 2 will take its capacity up to 30 million passengers and phase 3 up to 50 million. A high-speed rail link is planned for the future phases, encouraging public transport use and helping to reduce car traffic.
Commenting on the airport’s opening, Stefan Behling, head of studio at Foster + Partners, said: “Techo International Airport is a celebration of Cambodian culture and light – forming a new gateway to the country. It is also one of the most sustainable airports in the region, filled with natural daylight and incredible local greenery, and offering strong visual connections to the outside. The terminal holistically transforms the experience of travel for the people of Cambodia and the millions of visitors who will travel through here every year.”

After years of delays, Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah Tower now appears set to complete in 2028. If fully constructed, the skyscraper will stand 1,000-metres high and become the new tallest building in the world, overtaking Dubai’s 828-metre Burj Khalifa.
Construction works originally began in 2013 but were paused twice for extended periods: once following Saudi Arabia’s anti-corruption purge in 2017 and again at the start of the pandemic. Prior to works restarting the project had sat largely dormant since 2020 with only a circa 300-metre tall constructed.

New York has a new icon. After several years of construction, today marks the official opening of 270 Park Avenue, a $3BN skyscraper that will become the global headquarters of JP Morgan Chase. Designed @fosterandpartners, the supertall structure stands 423-metres above the streets of Manhattan’s Midtown East and can accommodate some 10,000 people.
Commenting on the opening, Lord Foster said: “This new all electric tower is hydro powered to minimize its carbon footprint. The unique cantilevered structure, clad in bronze, delivers two and a half times the amount of public space at the base, including a garden, than its predecessor. The unparalleled range of venues and leisure activities, coupled with tall spaces with generous natural light and high levels of fresh filtered air – twice that of building codes – combine to set new standards of wellbeing. It is the workplace of the future designed for today.”

Dubai-based architecture firm @znera.space has imagined a new "strategic waterway" for the United Arab Emirates that would circumvent the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Znera, the 'Strait of Union' maritime corridor would form a "national spine" enabling trade resilience, economic diversification and the emergence of new urban areas along its path.
Commenting on its concept, Znera said: "In an increasingly complex global landscape, the question is no longer just about growth, but about control, continuity, and long-term positioning. At ZNERA, we believe design has a role to play at this scale – contributing to conversations that shape not just cities, but the future direction of nations."

With plans to pedestrianise London’s Oxford Street now moving ahead, there’s been plenty of debate around what form its remodelling could take — including on our latest episode of The World’s Best Construction Podcast, where we discussed the idea of a new ‘urban garden’ down the street’s centre. Similar urban greening techniques are currently being deployed in Paris, where the city’s shift away from car-centric design in the past decade has seen a 40% reduction in air pollution.
In June, London Mayor Sadiq Khan (@mayorofldn) announced plans to move ahead with the partial pedestrianisation of Oxford Street “as quickly as possible” after the results of a new consultation showed that around 7 in 10 people backed the idea.
The 1.9-kilometre road stretches through the heart of London’s West End and welcomes some 500,000 visitors every day. It saw £3.1BN in retail sales during 2023. But placing so many people in the same space as cars, buses and cyclists has resulted in multiple fatalities over the years and plans to pedestrianise the space have been long-mulled over.

Sydney's new fish market has officially opened, welcoming an incredible 40,000 visitors on its first day. Designed by @3xnarchitects, @bvnarchitecture and @aspectstudios, the market is located in the city’s Blackwattle Bay. Beneath its distinctive wave-like timber roof — the largest timber roof in the Southern Hemisphere — the four-storey complex contains specialty food retailers, restaurants, cafes, and new public space.
The existing Sydney Fish Market had long been a staple among Sydneysiders, Australians and visitors – but 3XN hopes the new structure will “elevate the market as a top tourist destination”. The building and its surrounding development is projected to more than double the number of visitors to the area over the next ten years.
On its website, Sydney Fish Market describes the project as “the most significant harbourside building since the Opera House.”

The biggest LEGO set ever created will dramatically recreate the incredible natural light displays found inside the real Sagrada Família. Unveiled to mark the centenary of Antoni Gaudi's death and the completion of major external construction works at the site, the set will feature 12,060 pieces and stand over 60-centimetres high.
LEGO is understood to have structured the model's build process around the Basilica's actual construction phasing, starting with the Apse with Crypt and the Nativity façade – the only part Gaudí completed before his passing.
Works on the real Sagrada Família first started in 1882 and have been ongoing for more than 140 years. Now standing 172.5-metres above Barcelona, the structure officially became the world's tallest church when it overtook Germany’s Ulm Minster, a building which had held the title since 1890.

Rotterdam is planning a €240M new climate landmark — and the architectural competition for it is wild. Five architecture studios have unveiled radically different visions for Shift Landmark: a new destination that's seeking to inspire climate action through architecture.
The project is being commissioned by Shift, a social enterprise founded by entrepreneur Don Ritzen, which wants to create a global network of landmarks that make sustainable living tangible for millions of people. The first is planned for Waterkant, a major new waterfront district rising on the south bank of Rotterdam, on land originally earmarked for a new Feyenoord stadium.
The landmark hopes to open in 2031 and attract a million visitors each year.

Proposals for a high-speed rail loop that would link nine urban centres across Great Britain and Ireland have been put forward by RIBA President Chris Williamson. The so-called ‘Northern Loop’ would create a ‘dispersed but connected’ global city of around ten million people.
Williamson suggests that the Northern Loop would cost £130BN to construct and deliver £12BN a year in economic benefits. He confirmed in a social media post on 8 February that the proposal had been submitted to the Royal Academy’s 2026 summer exhibition.
“Maybe I have been too influenced by the scale, the vision and the ambition of The LINE in Saudi Arabia, having worked on the high-speed stations running alongside the 170-kilometre city for the last few years,” said Williamson in a statement provided to The B1M. “But we in the British Isles should be equally ambitious about our future. At present the Government seems to expect each city to compete for the same investment funding, when we need to encourage connectivity and collaboration.”
Locally-sourced stone arches would be used to the elevate the tracks above the landscape – minimising disruption and creating the flat, straight runs that are key to any high-speed line. Engineering consultants Elliott Wood have provided input into the proposals from an early stage.
The UK is currently constructing phase one of its second ever high-speed rail line, High Speed Two (HS2), which will run between London's Old Oak Common and Birmingham. The HS2 project has been branded an "appalling mess" by the UK Government and currently has no firm completion date. Latest estimates suggest that phase one could cost as much as £80BN.
“Britain needs a vision that can excite the country, regenerate the economy and restore confidence,” said Williamson. “Architects once published manifestos. They were not always right, but they inspired, provoked and set out ideas they believed in. This project is intended as a return to that time.”

This massive $12.5BN new airport is currently under construction in Ethiopia. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects for Africa's largest carrier Ethiopian Airlines Group, phase one of Bishoftu International is set to serve 60 million passengers a year, with capacity rising to 110 million passengers (through four runways) once all subsequent phases are built.
The airport sits around 40km south of Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa and has been primarily designed as a transit hub – it's expected that some 80% of passengers arriving will board connecting flights without leaving the building.
Phase one is targeting a 2030 completion date.
