Lucas Pinheiro Braathen collapsed in jubilation onto the snow after crossing the line in the men’s giant slalom, the enormity of his achievement had hit. He had won gold, Brazil’s and South America's first-ever medal at a Winter Olympics, and beat the great Marco Odermatt in the process.
A brilliant first run had put Braathen in pole position going into the second and final run. He was almost a second quicker than defending champion Odermatt and knew what he had to do for gold: go quicker than Odermatt again. And he did. The Norwegian-born 25-year-old’s combined time of two minutes, 25 seconds was 0.58 seconds quicker than the Swiss star, who had to settle for silver. Odermatt, widely regarded as one of the all-time greats of Alpine skiing, was denied gold once again at these Games. Though he has 53 World Cup titles to his name, Odermatt owns just one gold, from the giant slalom in 2022.

Alysa Liu won the gold medal in women’s figure skating at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics. She is the first American woman to medal in the event since 2006 and the first to secure a gold medal in the event since 2002.
Liu came out of retirement in 2024, punctuating her return with the 2025 World Championship. Two years later, she’s an Olympic champion.

Lindsey Vonn’s dream of reclaiming the women’s downhill gold medal on Sunday ended in disappointment, as the American Alpine skiing legend crashed on the Olympia delle Tofane slope at the Winter Olympics.
Vonn, who had ruptured her ACL nine days ago, went off a jump and clipped a gate in midair, sending her sideways as she landed hard in the snow. She received extended treatment after the crash and was flown away by helicopter. The race was paused for about 20 minutes.
It’s unclear if Vonn suffered further damage to her knee. She was originally scheduled to race the downhill, team combined and super-G at these Olympics. The latter two are still to come.
U.S. teammate Breezy Johnson won the race — and her first Olympic medal — becoming the first American since Vonn in 2010 to win Olympic gold in the downhill.

The New York Knicks won their first NBA championship since 1973 after defeating the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 on Saturday, 94-90.
The victory caps a dominant run by the Knicks, including a historic comeback win in Game 4 after trailing by 29 points, and closes out a championship series that has captivated New York City. This is the franchise’s third NBA championship.

The Americans beat Japan by just one point. Italy received bronze.
Ilia Malinin, also known as the “Quad God,” got the Americans back atop the podium with a captivating performance, resulting in a 200.03 score.
The 21-year-old prodigy-turned-superstar followed his less-than-stellar short program with his usual dynamite display. He landed five quad jumps.

The connection between Olympic snowboarders Choi Gaon and Chloe Kim extends beyond the medal podium.
Kim began mentoring Choi nearly a decade ago and cheered Choi on when she passed Kim as the youngest X Games halfpipe gold medalist in 2023.
"I feel like a proud Mom," Kim wrote on social media.
Even as competitors at Milan Cortina, Kim encouraged Choi after she had crashed on her first run. “You got this,” Kim told her. “You’re a badass snowboarder.”
Now the protégé has beaten her mentor as Choi became the youngest medalist in the Winter Games so far.
"I’ve known Gaon since she was little," Kim said. "She won her first Olympic gold medal at the same age as I did. It’s such a full-circle moment."

The U.S. beat Canada in overtime in the final of the men’s Olympic hockey tournament on Sunday, winning the gold medal for the third time.
With freshly broken teeth, Jack Hughes’ golden goal one minute and 42 seconds into three-on-three overtime delivered the U.S. team its first gold medal since 1980 and ended Canada’s dominance in best-on-best hockey.
The Americans abided by the advice that “Miracle on Ice” captain Mike Eruzione offered when he had lunch with the team on Saturday: “Just leave it all out there.”

Former Arsenal defender Pascal Cygan says he intends to send a signed jersey to Zohran Mamdani after being name-checked by the newly elected New York City mayor during an interview on the Adam Friedland show this week.
Speaking about his love of Arsenal, Mamdani said: “Every day I wake up, I think about Sebastien Squillaci, Pascal Cygan, Marouane Chamakh.”
The French newspaper L’Equipe published an interview with Cygan on Wednesday, in which the former defender, who formed part of the Arsenal squad that famously went a whole Premier League season unbeaten in the 2003-04 campaign, said he and his family had been “moved” by the mention.

In a devastating result, the 21-year-old American, who had been the favorite to win, failed to medal in men's individual figure skating.

Hudson Williams, the star of the Crave/HBO Max hockey romance show “Heated Rivalry”, said closeted hockey players, football players and basketball players have reached out anonymously.
"They’re reaching out to (author Rachel Reid), who will then relay these lovely, anonymous emails," said Williams in an interview with Andy Cohen.
"Sometimes they’re just reaching out privately through Instagram. Those ones are the ones that really just kind of hit you ... It's just hitting people right in the nerve." Williams added.
