I’ll never forget the sacrifices of the women who came before me. The women who endured in silence because they had no other choice.

To be the first in your bloodline to experience true freedom - to be educated, to travel the world, to choose your own life partner, to have independence and a voice - it comes with a strange kind of guilt.

Over the last few years, I’ve had to sit with the emotions of the women before me and realise that some of the pain I carried was never truly mine. It belonged to generations of women who had dreams they were never allowed to reach, words they were never allowed to say, lives they were never allowed to live.

And this moment felt like the final chapter of that healing. To stand at their graves, to pray for my Nani and great grandmother buried side by side, to tell them that no matter how far my freedom takes me, my heart will always remain with them. That I will never forget what they endured for us to exist here today. But also, that I no longer need to carry their suffering as my own.

They say you find what you seek, and as I raised my hands to make dua, two white butterflies flew past us.

Maybe it means nothing to some people. But to me, it felt like a sign. A reminder that they are still with me somehow. Guiding me. Protecting me. Keeping me rooted in who I am in a world where identity can feel so complicated.

I will forever be grateful for them, and for this moment ❤️

I was 6 years old when I attended my uncles wedding and was told I was to little to hold it, and then I was 14 at my cousins wedding and told I had to wait until I was married - so finally got to tick this off my bucket list on this trip!

The karoli ceremony was traditionally when the women from the grooms family, accompanied by women from the brides family, would head down to the stream and collect water on the wedding day to wash the groom with. They would sing songs on the way to the stream and back, accompanied by other women from the village and surrounding areas. The water was carried in these clay pots (my gran could carry 3 stacked at a time in her youth!). This is now purely symbolic and just a bit of fun - we actually put sugar in it instead of water to give it some weight cos we’d probably end up spilling the water everywhere and the ritual is now done during the wedding week not the morning of the wedding 🥰

When people say women in Islam are oppressed, I wonder which history they’re reading. The women of Islam were scholars, leaders, businesswomen, warriors and healers - 1400 years ago. Happy International Women’s Day!

Khadijah (RA)
A successful businesswoman and one of the most respected merchants in Mecca. She employed men to manage her trade caravans across Arabia, including the Prophet Muhammad PBUH. She was the first person to accept Islam and she was the one who proposed marriage to him. She had been married twice before.

Aisha bint Abu Bakr (RA)
One of the greatest scholars of early Islam. She narrated over 2,000 hadith, issued legal opinions, and senior companions would consult her for clarification on Islamic law. Her home became a centre of learning for the next generation of scholars.

Nusaybah bint Ka’ab (RA)
Known as Umm Ammarah, she defended the Prophet PBUH during the Battle of Uhud, standing between him and attacking soldiers. She suffered multiple wounds while protecting him and is remembered as one of the bravest companions in Islamic history.

Al-Shifa bint Abdullah (RA)
A scholar, teacher and expert in healing. She was trusted for her wisdom and was appointed by Caliph Umar (RA) to oversee the marketplace of Medina, effectively making her one of the first female public administrators.

Fatima al-Fihri
In 859, she used her inheritance to found Al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco, recognised as the oldest continuously operating university in the world. Education there was funded through charitable endowments so knowledge could be accessible to the community, the university was open to both men and women.

History tells a very different story than the one we often hear today, and this is just 5 women out of the millions of Muslim women throughout history.

I could write a full dissertation on how I’ve been feeling about everything that’s happening lately, but still I don’t think it’ll be enough 💔 I’m struggling to carry on as normal, to create fun escapist content, to even venture out into London (I’ve opted out of all the events I was invited to over the last fortnight). My heart is hurting, I want to say something or do something that will make a difference, make things better.. But instead, I sit with the weight of it all, whispering prayers into the silence, hoping they reach further than my words ever could. 💔

@monakattan called and said we’re taking a trip back to Y2K! I had too much fun dressing up with this theme, it is so not my aesthetic anymore but the 2000s was my prime (but I’m a mama now so can’t be getting messy like that anymore) 😂🙈 @kayali threw the best house party to celebrate the launch of 2 new fragrances to the Eden collection - Eden Sweet Peach and Eden Plush Pair! Fruity, juicy, nostalgic and oh so fun! 🍑🍐🥰

Eid Mubarak Insta Fam! Hope you’ve had a good one - it’s been wild for me. Fainted this morning in the 40 degree heat and needed 2 IV drips - alhamdullilah feeling so much better now though! It was so hot the whole day though and the WiFi in the whole village was playing up so I wasn’t even able to check out the girlies Eid fits back in the UK. But I did get to have fresh Qurbani meat and it may be the best I’ve ever had! 🥰 the weather is cooler this evening so guess our Eid starts now?? 😂

When the boys are asleep, then it’s finally me time, and me time always feel better in a huge suite 😉🥰

Easiest way to get my make up off after a long day is the @caudalie VinoClean cleanser, it literally melts everything off.

Had an extra long soak in the tub and did a full hair and body TLC with @jolovesofficial

And then for skincare, back to some old faves from @shiseido - the vital perfection night serum which really helps my skin feel tighter and firmer followed by the viral perfection night cream. I also used the Vital Perfection Intensive Wrinklespot treatment for the first time - this has some big claims such as reducing fine lines in just 7 days (will be sharing the results soon as I have had lines in between my eyebrows forever because of how much I scowl 😂!) but I am very impressed!)

I remembered to pack all my skincare but forgot a prayer mat 🙈 so a clean bathroom towel had to do, please tell me I’m not the only one who does this?

3 weeks in the motherland, over in the blink of an eye. I felt like I was in another world. Originally I only wanted to go for 10 days, I’m so glad my family convinced me to go for longer. It’s the most switched off and zen I’ve felt in my entire life. 50 of us from the uk, in one small village, daily chats with all the people I love - an actually village to raise my children and no idea what time of day it is! I still have so much to share - including lots of wedding content! But for now, I’m grateful for the experience and the memories and looking forward to going home ❤️

Ramadan Mubarak 🌙 This Ramadan my focus is feeding my soul, not my stomach or the algorithms ❤️

My diary this Ramadan is already super busy, so I have renewed my intentions of slowing down. Yes work, family commitments and responsibilities are important, in Islam they’re even considered worship, but this month is more important. It’s such a unique chance, and right now with the state of the world, our souls need the mercy of Ramadan more than ever ❤️ sending love and duas to you all ❤️
