Complaint to the UN regarding brutality against protestors in Delhi I have filed a Special Procedures complaint with the United Nations over the police brutality against peaceful protestors in Delhi on 20 July. Let me be straight about what this is and what it is not. UN Special Procedures are independent human rights experts appointed by the Human Rights Council. They cannot compel the Government of India to do anything. What they can do is write. If the experts act on a complaint, they send a letter to the Government of India setting out the allegations and asking it to explain itself. That letter is published. So is the government’s reply, or its silence. I have filed because every route at home is being held shut by the Modi Govt. The govt, instead of having some shame, is brazening it out as usual. Thousands of students marched peacefully towards Parliament. They were met with lathis and tear gas. Video shows seated protestors being beaten. Journalists with visible press credentials were struck. Mobile internet was cut across central Delhi without a single order published by any authority, so that none of it could be seen as it happened. What has followed: five FIRs against protestors, with more promised. Not one FIR against a single officer. No independent inquiry. Modi is untroubled by what Indians say. However, he seems to care a lot more about his personal PR internationally. Crores of rupees are spent into managing that image. Therefore, while we in the Opposition will pursue all legal means in our country, it is important that Modi-Shah are held accountable internationally too. The detailed complaint covers arbitrary detention, freedom of peaceful assembly and association, human rights defenders, torture and ill-treatment, and violence against women and girls. Govt hospital AIIMS has been ordered by Modi-Shah Govt to HIDE details regarding pellet gun victims from the Jantar Mantar Delhi protests. I’d filed RTIs with the 4 main union govt hospitals in Delhi asking for details including number of persons who sustained pellet gun injuries on 20th July. Of these, 2 hospitals responded & confirmed a total of 10 victims with pellet gun injuries. Bizarrely, AIIMS has refused to disclose the information claiming “it might directly or indirectly lead to identification of the patient” How does disclosing the NUMBER OF PELLET GUN VICTIMS enable “identification of the person”? Patient details have NOT been sought. All that’s been asked for is a simple number. Why are Modi-Shah so desperate to bury information about pellet gun victims from the Delhi protests? Even after a month, the govt has not released any details. We still don’t know how many victims in total suffered pellet gun injuries on 20th July. And now hospitals are being asked to suppress information. If Modi-Shah claim that the pellet gun use on unarmed protestors was legal, why so scared to disclose the details?

Amit Shah’s police is trying to intimidate protestors by saying “they are examining CCTVs and will file cases”. These crooks in uniform should know that we have OVERWHELMING EVIDENCE of how they assaulted peaceful protestors mercilessly. Keep the evidence coming.
