This was an important truth I had observed and process as a mom of boys. I grew up with a (mostly) single mother and watched her do everything. She gave us everything she could, but I also saw the weight of trying to be both roles and how short she fell in certain areas, not because she didn’t try but because you can’t possibly understand what makes up a man unless you are one. When I had sons of my own, I realized I can’t teach them everything they’ll need to grow into men. I can love them deeply, I can guide and nurture them, but there are lessons and ways of being that I had to make space for Gary to teach and step to be a supporting role. If you’re a single mom, I want to say this: you are doing something extraordinary. The strength it takes to hold all of it is something I’ll always admire. If you don’t have a partner, may you be surrounded by people who pour into your children and into you.
