Beyond excited to finally share my latest big @mobilesyrup project. 🍁 🎮 So many games are made in Canada, but so few are actually *set* here. I’ve been thinking about this a lot, especially as of late with wonderful Canadian movies and shows like Heated Rivalry and Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie taking the world by storm. I wanted to dive deeper into this. And so, over the past several months, I spoke to over 20 Canadian developers who have been making games that take place in Canada. Despite this generally not being seen as “commercial,” these devs still admirably chose to tell stories that represented all kinds of different parts of Canada. Showcasing the country’s stunning geography. Telling diasporic immigrant stories. Exploring rich Indigenous culture. Protesting issues in big cities. These games all show how making your art even more personal can actually allow it to stand out all the more.  I treated this as a sort of museum exhibit featuring info on each game alongside fascinating commentary from each of their devs. This is one of the biggest things I’ve ever done, and I’m so proud of how it came together. As always, it’s a genuine honour to play a small role in representing Canada’s world-class gaming industry. 🇨🇦 🎮 To be honest, it’s still a bit surreal to see us on the jury page, even as a returning juror, alongside all of these massive outlets I’ve looked up to all these years. We spent a long time slowly growing MobileSyrup’s gaming coverage over the years (in no small part due to @ianinkblot and @patrickorourke), so it’s still so validating to see this. It’s also lovely to be there alongside Canadian friends and colleagues like @cgmagonline and @cbc. I also want to thank my good friend @andrew.s.mohan and Katya Ryabova for helping us out on the jury this year. Since we’re a small team, I always want to include more voices in our vote, so I appreciate their input. Katya especially has been great; she started contributing recently to MobileSyrup and has done some wonderful work so far, especially with a feature about Indigenous Canadian games.
