Tariffs became real for us. and fast. Back in March, we placed our packaging order for our retinal serum launch in September, just before the new reciprocal tariffs kicked in. When our shipment finally arrived at the U.S. port, customs and duty charges hit us with a 46% fee. That’s nowhere near the scary 125% headlines, but still a huge hit for a small brand like ours.

This is the 3rd chapter in my new series, Diary of a Beauty Founder, where I’ll take you behind the scenes of building @kravebeauty: the wins, the challenges, and everything that keeps me up at night.

Now we face a tough choice: find a domestic or other country supplier or keep our original plan. Domestic means losing our 100% PCR packaging (back to zero recycled content) and months more of stability testing to get it right.

Believe it or not, this isn’t plastic. 

The beauty industry creates over 120 billion units of packaging every year, and most of it never gets recycled. Even when we try to do better, many “sustainable” materials still end up in landfills for decades… or centuries. 

At @pressresetvc , we invested in @shellworks_ because they’re rethinking packaging from the beginning, not the end. 

They developed Vivomer, a material made through bacterial fermentation that looks and feels like plastic, but is fully home compostable. No industrial recycling. No greenwashing. Just a material designed to return to the earth. 

I went to London to see it myself. I watched it being brewed, molded into packaging, and break down into soil. And it reminded me that sustainability isn’t about being perfect, it’s about building systems that actually work in the real world. 

If you’re a beauty, skincare, personal care, or supplement brand, this is worth paying attention to.

Here’s my honest ranking from least to most favorite. Some totally lived up to the hype, while others fell flat. But after testing them all, I understand why Australian sunscreens are considered some of the best in the world.

Unlike in many countries, sunscreen in Australia is regulated as a therapeutic good by the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration), the same authority that oversees medicines. 

That means every product labeled SPF 50+ has been rigorously tested for both UVA and UVB protection, water resistance, and stability.

Australia also happens to have some of the highest UV levels in the world, so effective sun protection isn’t optional—it’s part of daily life. That pressure has driven decades of innovation in texture, finish, and wearability.
