🫧🩷 THIS IS INCREDIBLE!! Even as I sat here editing this, I am just in awe at what Alice Brooks and Ariana Grande did with “The Girl In The Bubble” scene. I know this is a 5-min clip but I promise it’s worth watching to hear all the incredible details that had to be used to make this sequence, featuring multiple shots, look like one long continuous shot. What’s fascinating about a sequence like this is that it’s a great example of how technical decisions service the emotional arc of a character. All of these shots and choices are in-tune with Glinda’s journey. From a technical standpoint, Alice Brooks and Jon M. Chu are tasked with filming multiple shots that can be edited together to look like one. This takes incredible preparation and prep to design the set in a way that the camera and lighting can operate to bring the moment to life. From a performance perspective, @arianagrande has to keep a consistent emotional and vocal tone in all the different shots so that when it’s edited together as a “oner”, the audience feels they’ve just gone along a journey in a single shot. It’s such an amazing performance from Ariana. Ariana is also singing live during this sequence, which adds another technical level. And obviously have to shoutout the entire crew including the amazing @mikfliks who edits the sequence together, @jonmchu for directing the sequence and everyone on Alice’s crew to pull off this amazing shot. Clips and conversations like this are what remind me of why I love cinema so much. While the technical elements are amazing to see, it’s all in service of the story and the character. These tricks are used to build an emotional engagement with the audience so that we can suspend our disbelief and immerse ourselves in the storytelling. #reels #alicebrooks #arianagrande #wickedmovie #glinda

🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 How is this even possible?! Wow. For context, over the years, when Christopher Nolan would film IMAX sequences in films like The Dark Knight or Interstellar, he couldn’t record usable dialogue because the cameras were so loud. This is why you would see aspect ratio changes, from the IMAX 1.43:1 to the wider 2.20:1, in films like Dunkirk where we are in heavier dialogue scenes on the boat. The cameras sounded like lawn mowers. It was a temporary solution that has now lead us to this moment where Nolan can now achieve every scene in the IMAX format. With the new Keighley IMAX camera, they were able to achieve a quieter camera but it still wasn’t quiet enough to record the clean dialogue. Therefore, the filmmakers built a “blimp” system to encase the IMAX camera, which brought the camera noise down significantly. This way, Nolan doesn’t have to use ADR for the actors to re-record their dialogue. He could get the actual performance, in IMAX, on the day without having to use a regular 65mm camera to film the scene with the real audio. He could get the scene he wanted with the IMAX film camera. That presented another challenge though because the blimp is so large that actors couldn’t stand naturally in front of each other to film highly intimate scenes. Nolan created a mirror system where the actors could still see the other, in the mirror reflection, to still bring the authenticity to the sequence. Pure filmmaking magic. Growing up, my film school was DVD features. I watched and studied all the features on the Extended Editions for Lord of the Rings. I was in awe of the filmmaking and how the magic was created. That’s where I discovered the brilliant Andy Serkis and really tried to deepen my understanding of how every technical decision services the narrative and immersion. When I started this podcast, I originally envisioned it like a DVD features show where you hear from different departments for a film, from cinematography to editing to score to directing to acting, & so much more. Film is obviously so collaborative and there are so many departments that should be highlighted. I’m still working towards that. These conversations, which are all spoiler-free, dive into how the film was brought to life. This will be a 90-minute episode that dives into the craft and filmmaking of PROJECT HAIL MARY. Tom Cruise and I geeking out over the actual Beaumont VistaVision camera Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki used to film Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s DIGGER. This ended up being a 10-minute conversation with @tomcruise and I geeking out about shooting on film and the history of the VistaVision camera. Will share more soon. The VistaVision camera is really special. Designed around 1953/1954, the film mag sits flat, as the Kodak film stock runs through the camera exposing 8 perforations of film real estate. In a normal 35mm camera, the mag sits up, as the film runs through vertically, exposing up to 4 perforations of film real estate. That’s why when you watch classics like John Ford’s The Searchers or Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, North by Northwest or To Catch a Thief, you can feel the large format and depth of those images. Because you’re getting double the film real estate, you have higher clarity and less grain. It’s why you can see shots of wide landscapes in perfect clarity. It’s such a special format. For comparison, a 65mm IMAX camera also has a horizontal mag as the film runs, also horizontally, through the camera exposing 15 perforations of film real estate. Therefore, when you think of a regular 35mm 4-perf camera, then jumping to a 65mm 5-perf camera, then jumping to the VistaVision 8-perf camera and then to a 65mm IMAX 15-perf camera, you can see how the image/grain quality changes in each step. It’s why formats are so special. You can experience films differently, physically & emotionally, in the multiple formats. What’s unique to VistaVision, is getting this gorgeous 1.50 aspect ratio with the 8-perf negative. It’s an astounding, tall and beautiful image. It’s the same format Paul Thomas Anderson used on One Battle After Another. When shooting in this format, you have so many options to release in IMAX 70mm, 70mm and of course, VistaVision. Film formats aren’t for show or a gimmick. They are an integral part of narrative storytelling. Filmmakers use it as a tool to tell the story in the best way possible. Anyone who knows me, knows I’m an analog guy. It just feels alive in a way that I can’t explain. #tomcruise #digger

This ended up being a 10-minute conversation with @tomcruise and I geeking out about shooting on film and the history of the VistaVision camera. Will share more soon. The VistaVision camera is really special. Designed around 1953/1954, the film mag sits flat, as the Kodak film stock runs through the camera exposing 8 perforations of film real estate. In a normal 35mm camera, the mag sits up, as the film runs through vertically, exposing up to 4 perforations of film real estate. That’s why when you watch classics like John Ford’s The Searchers or Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, North by Northwest or To Catch a Thief, you can feel the large format and depth of those images. Because you’re getting double the film real estate, you have higher clarity and less grain. It’s why you can see shots of wide landscapes in perfect clarity. It’s such a special format. For comparison, a 65mm IMAX camera also has a horizontal mag as the film runs, also horizontally, through the camera exposing 15 perforations of film real estate. Therefore, when you think of a regular 35mm 4-perf camera, then jumping to a 65mm 5-perf camera, then jumping to the VistaVision 8-perf camera and then to a 65mm IMAX 15-perf camera, you can see how the image/grain quality changes in each step. It’s why formats are so special. You can experience films differently, physically & emotionally, in the multiple formats. What’s unique to VistaVision, is getting this gorgeous 1.50 aspect ratio with the 8-perf negative. It’s an astounding, tall and beautiful image. It’s the same format Paul Thomas Anderson used on One Battle After Another. When shooting in this format, you have so many options to release in IMAX 70mm, 70mm and of course, VistaVision. Film formats aren’t for show or a gimmick. They are an integral part of narrative storytelling. Filmmakers use it as a tool to tell the story in the best way possible.
