How to Shoot your own City 📸 I’ll be honest, sometimes shooting in your own backyard can seem repetitive or boring or mundane. But, with the right perspective (pun intended), you can still get creative every single time. Try out these tips and let me know what else you find helpful when shooting at home! All photos edited in @vsco Chase Reflections. Look beyond the obvious and see what’s hiding behind glass, mirrors, or reflective buildings. Look up. Sometimes you’ll find new compositions when you tilt your head up and use the grand scale to your advantage Find Human Movement. Slow down that shutter speed and use human movement to tell the hectic story of your urban jungle. Simplicity Speaks Volumes. Sometimes less is more. Focus in on one subject to remove and distractions. Simplify your frames. Frame within a Frame. Doorways, archways, scaffolding. These can all help to add dimension and laying to your images. Find the Symmetry. There is something so satisfying about balance and symmetry. With urban environment, you can find it everywhere. Get Low. A perspective that we normally don’t experience as humans walking around. Put your camera extra low to emphasize the scale of your surroundings. Tighten Up. With the right lens, zoom right in and compress your shots. Tighten up your frame and get intimate with your subjects.

Why I love the Ricoh GR IV HDF ⬇️ The Ricoh GR IV HDF is easily the most pocketable camera I’ve used in years. Not “small for a camera”… But actually pocketable. And that alone changes how often you shoot. Image quality is way better than you’d expect from a compact camera. Sharp, clean, and holds up in real-world shooting. If we’re being honest… Here’s what I would tell you. @vsco Preparation is always a good idea. Having a creative framework that you approach every shoot with will help to sculpt the vision. I use @vsco Canvas to moodboard and ideate with not only myself, but the rest of my team as well. BUT, don’t let it trap you creatively. Just because you have a plan, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be too rigid. Always allow creativity to flow. Shoot what you love. I’ve been in this trap before where you end up shooting something just out of necessity. A paycheque, a favour, or what someone else has told you to shoot. Don’t do it. Take the time to understand what lights a fire inside you. Follow that flame. Break rules thoughtfully. Rules are there to help guide you in the right direction. A lot of time for a technical reason. BUT, as the saying goes, rules are meant to be broken. You can’t possibly think outside the box if you don’t know what the box IS. Learn the rules, so you know when to ignore them. Just shoot. There is no better, faster, or easier way to find your style than to actually shoot. Learning what you like and don’t like will be the best way for you to shape that style. Don’t chase the style, let it come to you. Editing changes things. Your photo can become something entirely different when you go into the edit. Giving your photo a warmer feel, desaturating the yellows, crushing the blacks, adding in grain. All of these editing tools can change the way your photo feels. I use @vsco Studio Pro for most of my editing. Whether it’s one photo, or a batch of several, VSCO Studio Pro gets me to the finish line. Don’t wait. The moment you want to shoot a photograph is a moment that will never happen again. Take that shot. Even if you don’t think you’re fully ready yet, just shoot. It’s not a wall, it’s a window. Your camera shouldn’t take you away from the world around us. It should be a gateway into seeing the world through a more thoughtful and intentional lens. Use your camera to pay more attention.
