16 years ago I went to Ibiza for the first time. I partied at Space til 6 in the morning then slept on the beach cos I had no money for a hotel. Today, I’ve just finished my first season as a headliner at Hi Ibiza (formerly Space). I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t nerve wracking. Were 6000 people really going to show up to watch me every Monday for 16 weeks? Was my show really going to on par with the legends that grace the decks in Hi every night? But we did it. We pulled it off. It’s been the best, most rewarding experience. It’s wild what can be achieved with consistency over years of work. The yearbook said it and almost 20 years of work later it’s real 🙏🏻 Thank you to the incredible team at Hi, my team, Meduza, and of course everyone who bought tickets ❤️ you made my dreams reality. See you next season?!

Get Closer Los Angeles… one of those nights I’ll never forget. I always knew we could do something insane here and it’s so much more special when we did it to raise money for homelessness. 2 questions… who needs the full set? Which city should we bring Get Closer to next?

Some people get weirdly offended by the idea of DJs practicing.

Like a set only counts if every single second is completely freestyle.

I get where that comes from. There are definitely sets where I want to play freestyle and take the music where the crowd tells me. If I’m playing an extended club set somewhere like Space Miami, I’m not rehearsing every transition. That kind of set is about reading the room, moving with it, taking risks, going wherever the night goes.

But a Get Closer set is different.

That’s 60 minutes. It’s like a showcase for me. It’s technical. It’s me trying to show people what’s possible with the decks when they’re feet away from me.

So yeah, I practice!

I practice the transitions so I can get the timing right with my eyes closed. I practice the moments where one small mistake can mess everything up.

No one is born with the confidence to do this stuff in front of thousands of people.

You build that confidence on your own before anyone is watching.

I build it at sound checks. In empty rooms. In the boring repetitions. In the moments where there’s no crowd energy coming back at me.

Because when the crowd is there and the tension is on, you need something solid underneath you.

You’re only ever as good as your worst practice.

Nobody would go and watch their favourite band and think, “I hope they haven’t rehearsed this.”

Nobody would watch a football team walk out and think, “I hope they didn’t train too hard.”

But somehow with DJs, practice gets mistaken for faking it.

For me, it’s the opposite.

It means I care enough to prepare properly.

It means I respect the people who bought a ticket. I respect the music. I respect the idea that if I’m going to put myself in a position where I’m expected to perform with precision, I should do the work before I get there.

Not every DJ set needs to be rehearsed.

Not every moment should be planned.

But when the goal is to push the technical side as far as I can, I’m not leaving that to chance.

This is me trying to make sure my worst is still good enough when it matters.

People will hate this but the way technology has opened up DJing to regular people is amazing. DDJ FLX2 is good for young kids or people on a small budget. If you can afford it I would recommend the DDJ FLX4 cos it has more CDJ-like controls.. go & do cool sh!t 🔥💪🏼

Practicing using gate cue on the CDJ3000X to create moments in a set. I quite like this. I set a short manual loop on one of the hot cues so I could jump between the synth sound and the loop to create this effect 💪🏼
