The Toronto Raptors are 12-5 and 2nd in the Eastern Conference. It’s their best start to a season since 2019-20! They pressure the ball, scram, peel and rotate tirelessly on defense—and they run more than any team in the association. They battle the Cavs in a contest of contenders in the East TONIGHT at 7:00 pm/et on Peacock!

In 1978, George Gervin and David Thompson delivered the most dramatic scoring title race in NBA history. Thompson delivered 73 points in the final game of the regular season to take the lead. Gervin responded with 63 the same today to take back his lead by less than 0.1 PPG. Almost 50 years later, there’s never been another photo finish quite like this in the NBA. And there likely won’t be in our lifetimes. Follow @itslucasburns for more! Reminder this is formerly nba.in_depth if it’s your first time seeing this username or profile picture! The Jalen Brunson comparison isn’t just a lazy left-handed hot take! Ajay Mitchell and Jalen Brunson have a similar statistical profile in their initial breakout season👇 At 24 years old, Brunson became a Top-5 Sixth Man of the Year candidate. Mitchell did the same at 23 years old. I looked at their raw box score numbers in these seasons, as well as when they each played 28+ minutes—kind of an arbitrary cutoff or classification of “starter” minutes. Admittedly, Brunson had a more direct path to starter minutes moving forward with Dallas. For Mitchell, his minutes and role fluctuate based on Jalen Williams’ health—both in the present and future. As of today, I’d bet against Mitchell matching Jalen Brunson’s status as a perennial All-NBA guard, simply because that’s an extraordinarily difficult ceiling to reach! But there’s no doubt Ajay Mitchell is a starting caliber guard right now and is likely a longterm starter moving forward in his career. Pretty incredible for a former 2nd round pick who was playing in Summer League games less than 12 months ago.

Here’s how much every NBA franchise has spent on luxury tax payments since it was introduced in 2002. Any surprises?🤔 Golden State laps the field, while New Orleans and Charlotte have famously NEVER gone into the luxury tax. An ownership group willing to spend money is one of the biggest competitive advantages in the NBA💰

It’s gonna be a busy offseason for NBA bigs! Who do you think will switch teams?🤔 Neemias Queta is in a particularly interesting spot with Boston. He would like to have his $2.6m Team Option declined and sign a richer contract starting 2026-27. Boston will want the same thing—but only if they get a discount on the back end for offering a raise one year early. I wonder if something in the 4y-$70m range is enough to strike a deal? Negotiations for all of Duren, Kessler and Hartenstein ought to be exciting as well. Still plenty of rotation talent available behind those guys.

Even with historic new longterm contracts signed every summer, one thing has remained unchanged—Stephen Curry atop the NBA’s salary rankings💰 2026-27 will be Steph Curry’s age 38 season, and his tenth consecutive with the highest NBA salary. Starting on August 29th, Curry is eligible to sign a 2-year $134m extension that would keep him with the Warriors—and keep his status as the highest paid NBA player—through 2028-29, his age 40 season. Any other surprises in the Top 5s? I was pleasantly surprised to find a Kyle Lowry sighting🥹

Deandre Ayton is the funniest player in the NBA if you’re not a Lakers fan😭 Ayton actually played well last night (21 points 9-11 fg) after being mostly invisible the last few games. But man these kinds of possession are insane to watch in real time.

Not that Washington is well-equipped to stop anyone at the moment, but opposing Centers in particular have had their way lately. Alex Sarr has been in and out of the lineup with a hamstring issue, which has left extra “center” minutes to Tristan Vukcevic and Anthony Gill. Having as few true Center minutes as possible is a tried and true tanking method in the NBA—it’s a strategy opposing teams obviously appreciate as well😅

After grabbing 16 boards last night, Russell Westbrook passed Jason Kidd for most rebounds in NBA history among guards🔒 The only other active players in the Top 10 are James Harden (6th) and Chris Paul (8th).

Anyone saying they’d beat TJ McConnell of all guys in 1s is lying. Nasir Core—for those unaware, like myself 24 hours ago—set the Big3 scoring record this past season. He commented how McConnell would get fried 1v1 on Michael Beasley’s 3s And Ones podcast. The NBA player responses to Nasir Core were pretty telling. From the responses I read, Naji Marshall gave maybe the most animated response, saying Nasir Core was rage baiting. But most other responses fell somewhere between humored and dismissive. You cannot beat an NBA player in 1s. And even if you could, TJ McConnell DEFINITELY isn’t the guy😭 Pretty sweet of the @pacers to drop a 3-minute highlight tape of McConnell today!

Tari Eason is suffering an outlier cold stretch right now. 1-28 on threes and 3-42 on all jumpers in March🥶 Eason is a career 35% 3P shooter on positionally average volume, and up to 37% this year on 6 attempts per 36 minutes. His three-point shooting, both accuracy and volume, have taken a significant leap in 2026, which makes his March shooting splits even more jarring. h/t @bradeauxnba

Best remaining NBA free agents! Seems like a lot of business is on hold until LeBron makes his decision🔮 Also looks like the restricted free agents are in for a long summer once again… Other fringe free agents include: Aaron Holiday, Jalen Pickett, Jae’Sean Tate, Ochai Agbaji, Jett Howard, Gary Payton II, Kevon Looney, Drew Eubanks, Quinten Post. DeMar DeRozan is expected to join this crew if Sacramento is unable to find a trade suitor for him.

The Warriors have rounded a corner this month. The offense is humming, and they’ve found meaningful contribution from their depth.👇 De’Anthony Melton needs a shoutout. Warriors’ guard depth has long been crowded with painfully average shooting, playmaking and athleticism. Melton’s return has given Golden State a noticeable injection of defensive athleticism and north-south playmaking. He’s a wonderful fit with Steph and Butler, but can also help ease ball handling burdens off the bench. And while the Warriors best lineups are still a step below truly elite — +6.8 Net Rating with Steph and Butler ON — they’re good enough to be true competitors in the Western Conference playoff picture. And who knows? Maybe they’re one swing away with a Kuminga trade from *really* raising some eyebrows in the West.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are facing immense financial pressure this offseason💰 If OKC wanted to use both their no.12 and no.17 draft picks, it would cost them $80m in luxury tax penalties despite only adding $10m to their roster for next season. Luckily for OKC, they have a few mechanisms for reducing their tax bill in 2027. Isaiah Hartenstein and Lu Dort combine for about $47m in Team Options. OKC could cut them both, reduce their luxury tax bill all the way down to less than $15m, AND duck the 2nd Apron. In reality, OKC is more likely to move on from Dort and bring Hartenstein back at a reduced number—that alone would save them up to $200m on their luxury tax bill depending on Hartenstein’s new contract. Moves are coming. Come October, OKC will not field the same 15-man roster that was eliminated in the 2026 Western Conference Finals.
