Worth the hype? 🤔 What place should we rate next? 🌍 Follow us @HudsonAndEmily as we rate every place in the world worth visiting! 😉 🗺️ This is part of our series "SKIP OR TRIP" - comment MAP for the full list, and let us know what place you want us to rate! 📍Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, Brazil 🥇Trip-ability Score = A Tier ✅ Pros: If we are ranking on pure beauty, Lençóis Maranhenses easily takes S-tier. It legitimately feels like stepping onto another planet. You have thousands of crystal-clear, freshwater lagoons, naturally filtered through pure quartz, nestled perfectly between rolling white sand dunes. Not only is it visually unreal, especially where the stark white dunes crash right into the lush treeline, but the water is incredibly warm and perfect for swimming. Photos don't do justice to how massive this place is. It's over 380,000 acres!! 😱 ❌ Cons: The reason it is A tier is because the journey isn't for every traveler. You have to take multiple flights, then a long drive and a bumpy 4x4 jeep ride. Also the time of year you visit matters a lot. The lagoons dry up completely if you visit during the wrong months. Remember to plan ahead. There is very little shade and the midday sun can get extremely hot. 💡Travel Tips: 📅 Timing is everything for Lençóis Maranhenses, so plan your visit between June and August when the rain-fed lagoons are at their fullest. 🚙 You can't drive yourself into the park, so you'll need to ook a group tour from the town of Barreirinhas starting around $45 to $60 (or Santo Amaro). Even still it is at the top of our bucket list to visit! 😍 🌅For the best experience, book an afternoon tour to catch the dramatic golden hour shadows. During the rainy season the entire ground is transformed into a giant natural mirror! There are other salt flats but this is the world's largest, stretching over 4,000 square miles. Out of the 194 countries we've visited this is the most beautiful sunset we've ever seen! It is a truly feels like walking on another planet. ❌ Cons: Why this isn't an S Tier - Getting there isn't easy! It requires multiple flights or a 10 hour bus ride from the La Paz. The extreme elevation sits at almost 12,000 feet above sea level. This makes altitude sickness very common and it can easily ruin your trip if you are not prepared. And the experience is very weather dependent. You want to visit during the rainy season for the mirror effect. But if it is cloudy or raining it could block the sunset! 💡Travel Tips: What time of year you visit makes a HUGE difference. For the mirror effect you want to visit between December - March otherwise the salt flats will be completely dry. But the rainy season comes with a lot of rain which can ruin the sunset views! The best is to plan extra days to adjust to the altitude and give yourself flexibility in case of bad weather. 📅 When to Go: December - March. Iconic blue domed churches, cliffside views, and absolutely stunning sunsets. Plus surprisingly reasonable boutique hotels starting around $150 a night. ❌ Cons: The crowds! 500,000+ visitors in the summer makes it almost impossible to walk in the main city, let alone enjoy the sunset. 💡Travel Tips: VISIT DURING SHOULDER SEASON! Also wake up early to explore the streets at sunrise before the large cruise ship crowds arrive. Make sure to check out other beautiful towns like Imerovigli and Pyrgos instead of spending all your time in Oia. Also wear very comfortable walking shoes because there are lots of steep steps everywhere. 📊 Estimated Monthly Visitors: -Peak Summer (July - August): 500,000+ visitors -Shoulder Season (May, June, Sep, Oct): 250,000 - 400,000 visitors +Off-Season (Nov - March): Under 50,000 visitors 📅 When to Go: May, September, and October. See the real-life fortress that it inspired Disney's Tangled and The Lord of the Rings. It has an incredible 1,300-year history of remaining unconquered thanks to the epic surrounding tides and quicksand. ❌ Cons: The only reason this isn't an S Tier is because as it grows more famous the crowds also grow too. The narrow streets in the city can get overwhelmingly packed during peak season. If you go during the winter, you run the risk of dreary weather. 💡Travel Tips: To see it when it is green visit in May-June, early morning before the crowds, and at low tide! If you just want to make it a day trip, there are plenty of stress-free by booking a guided day tour directly from Paris. (But depending on the year you might arrive with more crowds) Also, the quicksand at high tide are very real! 💦 Daily Tides: There are two high tides and two low tides every single day. The exact times shift forward by about 50 minutes each day as they follow the moon's rotation. 📅 When to Go: Late March - May. You can choose between the iconic south rim or the peaceful north rim. The hiking trails offer an unforgettable adventure for all skill levels. ❌ Cons The areas near the main visitor's center on the south rim gets completely overrun with crowds during peak season. The North rim is closed for the winter. If you just come for the view and not to hike and explore you might leave disappointed. 💡Travel Tips Get away from the crowded visitor center and Mather Point for a better experience. Drive the extra four hours to the north rim if you want to escape the massive crowds. Book your lodges or campgrounds at least six months in advance because they sell out fast. Amazing beaches, waterfalls, and several hotel options for every budget! 🐬 One of the best places to swim with dolphins in the wild! 💦 The "underwater waterfall" is really unique. But the real magic is the beach and mountain view. ❌ Cons: The famous "underwater waterfall" illusion can only be seen properly from a drone or an expensive helicopter ride. And it usually is most impressive in videos online. ✈️ Getting to this remote island requires a very long flight from most places in the world. 💰 Staying at a nice beachfront resort can easily cost over $300 USD per night. 📅 When to Go: May - December. Amazing beaches, waterfalls, and several hotel options for every budget! 🐬 One of the best places to swim with dolphins in the wild! 💦 The "underwater waterfall" is really unique. But the real magic is the beach and mountain view. ❌ Cons: The famous "underwater waterfall" illusion can only be seen properly from a drone or an expensive helicopter ride. And it usually is most impressive in videos online. ✈️ Getting to this remote island requires a very long flight from most places in the world. 💰 Staying at a nice beachfront resort can easily cost over $300 USD per night. 📅 When to Go: May - December. The local culture is beautiful and the food is absolutely incredible. You can easily find amazing luxury villas for under $100 a night. There are tons of people from all around the world staying in Bali. ❌ Cons: The traffic in popular areas like Canggu and Seminyak can be a total nightmare. It has also become very crowded with tourists in recent years. Some beaches struggle with trash washing ashore during the rainy season. 🏖️ Beaches: Don't plan to visit Bali for the world's best beaches. While there are beaches, the most beautiful beach locations are actually on other islands in Indonesia. ✈️ Other Islands To Visit Nearby: Bali is a great launching point to some of the most beautiful places in the world (often less crowded!) 1. Raja Ampat (highest marine biodiversity on Earth) 2. Komodo National Park (prehistoric dragons and multi-colored beaches) 3. Lombok (what Bali was 20 years ago) 4. Nusa Penida (Beautiful cliffside beaches and 45 minute boat ride from Bali) 5. Mount Bromo & Ijen Crater in Java (Otherworld volcano sunrises & blue volcanic flames) 6. Gili Islands (laid-back tropical escape with no cars and white sand beaches) 💡Travel Tips : Bali is a dream for many but it's not for everyone. Set realistic expectations.Download the Grab or Gojek apps for cheap rides and fast delivery. Rent a scooter to get around the bad traffic (if you are comfortable driving 🛵 in traffic). Head up north to escape the heavy crowds. See other beautiful, less crowded places in Indonesia other than Bali!  📅 When to Go: April - October.
