Then getting that physical exercise and mental wellbeing, and they’re connecting with each other,” adds Kayani – with attenders saying they feel the benefit. After a TikTok video they posted advertising the classes at Jamia Usmania mosque in Bradford went viral – to the surprise of organisers – they have had interest from mosques across the UK and farther afield, including from Malaysia and Canada, with inquiries on how similar initiatives could be implemented for their congregation. Kayani believes that the physical and mental health benefits of the classes will have a positive impact on public health and the NHS. According to government health data on physical activity published in 2024, men from Asian (59.6%) and “other” (60%) ethnic groups are less likely to be active than the overall average (65.6%). A cat decided it was the main character during the final scene of a Romeo and Juliet ballet performance by the Imperial Russian Ballet Company in the Turkish city of Izmir. The cat entered the open-air theatre and took to the stage, where it decided to lie down, lick itself, and claw at Romeo’s hair. It also climbed atop one of the props as the performers kept going, despite chuckles from the audience.

Today, David Attenborough turns 100.    The British broadcaster, whose sonorous voice has described the wonders of life on Earth to billions of people, has inspired global efforts to treasure and protect wildlife over a lifetime that has coincided with mass extinction and the breakdown of a stable climate.   Recognised as a consummate storyteller, his sparse narrative, dramatic timing and sense of humour connects viewers to ecosystems from the Amazon to the Arctic and the African savannah. Attenborough has become arguably humanity’s most trusted interpreter of other species, thanks to the ubiquity of television.    In recent years, he has drawn even more attention to the damage being done to the natural world.
