It’s my second cancerversary. I was diagnosed two years ago today. It was a total surprise, but in hindsight there were some signs 🫠. What a trip. It feels like it was just yesterday and also like it was a fever dream that didn’t actually happen. It’s still surreal but the more the dust settles the more I can see the weird good that has come from it. I hope you keep going, through whatever stage of hardship or triumph you’re in. And, for the love of God, schedule yourself a lil mammogram why don’t ya. 🙃 And maybe come see one of my shows while you’re at it 🤷🏼‍♀️ link in the bio. #breastcancer #cancerversary

This is 40! I don’t normally plan birthday things (it makes me shy so I usually hide away) but @mametown and @elliottmorgan surprised me with some of my FAVORITE people for the sweetest dinner at @linguafrancarestaurant (swipe to the end for the reaction)! I love these people!!! And peep the Mametown original cocktails 🥹!?! COME ON. She absolutely crushed it. Fries, friends, and a fuck ton of cake??? My heart is so full!!! I’m thankful and hopeful and really feel like myself these days. Gratitude and all that shit! Dirty thirty is long gone, bring on DORKY FORTY!!! 🙃💖

I don’t normally plan birthday things (it makes me shy so I usually hide away) but @mametown and @elliottmorgan surprised me with some of my FAVORITE people for the sweetest dinner at @linguafrancarestaurant (swipe to the end for the reaction)! Apologies for another post about the hall of fame, I just hardly wear anything other than big soft sloppy clothes these days so I had to commemorate a pant-less ensemble. Still buzzing from the quick, surreal trip to @vidcon and honored to be included in a group of such inspiring creators. See if you can tell which of these photos were taken by professionals/creators who know how to find their light and which were taken by me/my husband’s thumb? How I landed in the hall of fame for content creation is still a curious mystery. 🙃 Also any chance I get to use this Vitamin C song I WILL TAKE IT. (Thanks for the first two pics @ashlynicolephoto!)

I’ve been excited to share pics from my shoot w/ @kimnewmoney & @mohawkmakeup but I’ve been overthinking the *best* way to post these strategically so f*ck it I’m just gonna start posting them. I needed new promo photos for my show, Let Me Get This Off My Chest, and Kim & Val stepped up last minute so beautifully. The night before the shoot I realized I hadn’t taken any photos like this, in a studio with hair and makeup and styling, since before breast cancer treatment. And I got spooked. It’s been a weird, windy year trying to meet myself post treatment. Apparently, you don’t just ring the bell and ✨ta-da✨ you’re back to your old familiar self. Or, ✨ta-da✨, you’re new and improved, packed with perspective and purpose. I WISH. You get pushed into a funky liminal space of burgeoning independence mixed with fearful remembrance. The celebratory “I did it!” nervously followed w/ “but, what THE F*CK was that?!’ You regain body autonomy laced w/ a new awareness of your own incredible fragility. You became a familiar stranger in an increasingly unfamiliar skin suit. You’ve lived inside your body’s rebellious distortions & unbelievable resilience; the participant and the witness of your own change, for better and worse. And the only constant is that fickle b*tch, change. And then it’s over. And you’re still in that suit. In whatever condition it’s in. And you go on your merry way through the world, trying to arrange the pieces of you that are still there with the new ones you’ve picked up to form some version of you that feels real or whole again. It’s WILD. Not to sound TOO F*CKING CLICHE, but the last year has been a bumpy road. I’m not “getting back to normal” I’m “going towards me”. Whoever I’m becoming. Putting this show together has been a joy. Metabolizing the experience into something meaningful & silly has brought me closer to myself. These pictures reflect that. More coming soon. Thank you, Kim & Val! I’m feeling more like Grace than I have in a long time. Okay, thanks for letting me get that off my chest! Wanna hear me get more things off my chest?? SEE MY SHOW! Here’s a quick smattering of some Vidcon moments that I could find. It’s barely the tip of the iceberg and hardly encapsulates the uniquely intoxicating (literally & metaphorically) energy of those weekends.   I never had a sense of community growing up and YouTube was one of the first places I felt like I belonged. The first Vidcon I went to was in 2011, the last year it was in LA before it moved to Anaheim. @michelleakin21 and I got passes and flew in from NY. We misjudged where to stay and booked a hotel on the opposite side of town bc it was cheap. There was no Uber so we drove our rental to the Vidcon hotel and sat in the lobby all day meeting creators as they passed. At night we moved to the lobby bar, drinking and Grace-facing (see last slide) and gawking at creators we recognized but were too shy to talk to. The energy was electric and wholly nerdy. Giddy passion oozed from every corner. There was a look in everyone’s eye like “can you believe we get to do this??” It was inclusive and inspiring. I felt like I belonged.   For the next 8 years I was fortunate to be invited as a featured creator. Every year I looked forward to that crazy weekend of geeky revelry. It was like MTV’s Spring Break had a baby w/ a corporate work retreat. With all the fruit loops flavored vodka you could drink. And I DID. Vidcon has seen me at my best and at my worst.   But the hangovers were eased by the joy of spending a weekend seeing creators that felt like friends & viewers that felt like family. It was the internet incarnate, in all of its weird welcoming glory. I loved it. To go back years later and be inducted into the Hall of Fame is as silly as it is stunning. I still feel like the girl sitting in the lobby of her favorite fever dream, but I’m humbled to go back & leave a lil piece of myself in a place that has given me so much.
