I almost lost my life fighting against the evil people who hurt this city. When I was shot in 1992, everything changed. I learned how fragile life is and how strong the human spirit can be. I survived because I refused to give up. If someone can be shot for speaking the truth, that is a dangerous time for our society. But I will never stop speaking up. I will always fight for what I know is right, for safety, for fairness, and for working people who deserve better. I have fought the powerful before and I will keep doing it for you. I almost lost my life fighting against the evil people who hurt this city. When I was shot in 1992, everything changed. I learned how fragile life is and how strong the human spirit can be. 34 years ago today I was shot in the back of a yellow cab five times with hollow point bullits on the orders of John Gotti Sr. to his son John Gotti Jr. and the Gambino crime family. All week long many of you have reminded me this date coming up, especially young people, reminding me of this day that changed my life. They couldn’t shut me up exposing the Mafia and all of it’s life threatening activities, so they wanted me dead. They had spread fear and fright throughout the city and had even corrupted our police and elected officials. I survived to fight another day. Good once again had triumphed over evil. This message has resonated with a new generation. They use this as and example of how when the people are united agaisnt evil, we can never be defeated by crime , corrupt officials and unethical business practices. Our Mission continues…….. thank you for all the support all these years.

Throwback to the 1990s!
Happy birthday to our rescue cat Mittens! A favorite cat loved by so many of our friends and family! Mittens was birthed six years ago. Like most cats born in New York City outdoors she wound up in the shelter slated to be killed along with her three siblings. Nancy & I stepped in to rescue her before that happened along with her three brothers & sisters. Since then, Mittens has flourished to become one of the most beloved cats of the colony; caring for other cats, helping new rescues get acclimated to their surroundings and interacting with everyone she meets with amazing energy.

All parades matter. The Jamaica Rising Day Parade was a great celebration of Brooklyn’s Jamaican community. What happened afterward was unacceptable. The promised festival was cancelled just an hour before it was supposed to begin, leaving families, vendors and the community angry and confused! If the City can’t properly organize a first year festival, that’s embarrassing. People deserve answers. The city needs to be held accountable.

All parades matter. The Jamaica Rising Day Parade was a great celebration of Brooklyn’s Jamaican community. What happened afterward was unacceptable. The promised festival was cancelled just an hour before it was supposed to begin, leaving families, vendors and the community angry and confused! If the City can’t properly organize a first year festival, that’s embarrassing. People deserve answers. The city needs to be held accountable.

The city needs to get control of what is happening underneath our streets. We’ve now seen people entering and exiting our sewer system, including during UN week when security is supposed to be at its highest. The NYPD is investigating, but this cannot become something New Yorkers simply get used to seeing. Bad people looking to do us harm will see vulnerabilities like this as weakness and look for ways to exploit them. We need to take it seriously before someone with far worse intentions does. And think about this: our sewers aren’t being properly cleaned, contributing to flooding when heavy rain hits, yet people are apparently able to get underground through these access points. We need better maintenance AND better security. The city needs better coordination between the NYPD, DEP and every agency responsible for our streets and critical infrastructure. Secure vulnerable access points, clean out the sewer system and know what is happening beneath our streets. If you see something, say something. Don’t wait until something worse happens to finally get this under control.

Explain how MTA will go from raising fares to making buses free? It’s all lies. Mass transit in New York is a disaster despite billions upon billions in spending. Riders are packed onto delayed buses. Trains are unreliable. Service gets cut. Fares go up. And the people paying the price are working families trying to get to work, school, and home safely. Wake up NYC- the people we rely on to make life better continue to lie, steal, and break promises.

We keep reacting after the shooting, after the arrest, after another family is destroyed. The real work has to start years earlier, giving kids discipline, mentors, responsibility and a place to belong before the streets and gangs get to them first. The Guardian Angels have spent nearly 50 years doing exactly that. Our alumni know firsthand what can happen when a young person is given a better path. That’s why we are rebuilding our Junior Guardian Angels and recruiting a new generation to get involved. A 12-year-old should be riding his bike, not getting caught in gunfire. We need to focus on gamg life prevention - and prioritize safety needs for all zip codes. It’s been too many years of failing NYC youth in need.

That means when the rain comes down, the water has nowhere to go. Streets flood, intersections become dangerous, businesses take on water and neighborhoods in the outer boroughs and Lower Manhattan pay the price. Cleaning leaves and garbage off the top is not enough. DEP trucks need to clear the buildup inside the catch basins and keep them functioning BEFORE the storm comes, not after neighborhoods are already underwater. The Mayor and DEP need to publish a basin-by-basin cleaning schedule and a record of when each one was actually serviced. New Yorkers deserve to know whether the infrastructure on their block is being maintained. Here is the warning: the next major storm is coming. We know where the flooding happens.
