The pitch (politely delivered) is that the global hunt for “the next Silicon Valley” is a category error. Toronto is not a Silicon Valley in waiting. Neither is Zurich. The more interesting question, in Frosst’s telling, isn’t which city can best impersonate Northern California, but what those cities intend to become on their own terms. Frosst tells Observer there is no shortage of brilliant minds, unusual ideas, or formidable developers scattered well beyond the Bay. What’s in short supply, he says, is the nerve to build something that looks like itself. The goal isn’t to clone the Valley’s ambitions, but to project your own—and to have an opinion about what you actually want technology to do in the world.
