I’m Mike Ward. I do comedy. I spent 10 years battling the legal system because of a joke I told on stage. I was fined by the Quebec Human Rights Commission, lost in court, appealed, lost again, and had to take my case all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. I finally won.

If governments can jail comics for words, what’s stopping them from doing it to other artists, journalists… or anyone?

Now in Brazil, comedian Léo Lins has been sentenced to more than 8 years in prison. For doing stand-up. Yes — prison. For jokes.

This isn’t just about Brazil. It’s about freedom of expression — everywhere. I stand with Léo Lins.

All of that — over a joke.

You don’t have to like what he said. You don’t have to laugh. But no one should go to jail for offending someone.

Comedy is messy. It’s supposed to be. If it were clean and safe, it wouldn’t be funny.

Taking Jimmy Kimmel off the air is unthinkable to me. When I had my free speech issues, Americans told me “That could never happen here. We have the First Amendment to protect us.” Well… it’s happening.

If he’s off the air, it’s only because the FCC scared ABC. This is 100% political. USA was THE global symbol of free speech, it's turning into a pale copy of a once great nation. Shame on you America.

Kimmel always defended free speech. Yes, he’s on the left, but he was a free-speech advocate. I met him when Just for Laughs did a benefit for me, he was there to show support. He hung out and smoked weed in my dressing room. He was the nicest guy.
