The new shape shifts weight toward the sweet spot, helping hitters generate more power where it matters. @thebpl_com develops custom bats for top MLB hitters and gave us data comparing exit velocity along the barrel for traditional vs torpedo bats. The numbers show that traditional bats generate 2–3% more power at the very end, but torpedo bats produce 5–7% more power closer to the handle, right where many hitters make contact. They’re not for everyone, though. Players with tight, consistent contact zones benefit most, while those with varied patterns may prefer traditional barrels and in the future, we could see players switch bats depending on the pitcher, like golfers switching clubs.
