I’ve spent a lot of time processing my daughter’s decision to choose Magikarp as her starter Pokémon. My daughter, curious by nature and a natural empath, saw a lonely Magikarp sitting off to the side and was intrigued by the fish-Pokémon. Every Pokémon trainer knows that Magikarp is essentially useless until level 20, but I now recognize that my daughter was doing something wise beyond her years: investing in her future. While most people see a helpless orange fish capable of one move called “Splash” that delivers zero damage while it pathetically flails around, my daughter saw a lonesome Pokémon in need of a friend. A Pokémon with massive potential. A Pokémon that, one day, would evolve into a big beautiful Gyarados. Esmé taught me an important lesson today, and that is: don’t judge a fish by its cover… because one day, it may become a giant water dragon that can learn ice beam.
