There’s no way I almost got flipped by a manatee into the Croc Canal 😱😳🐊 I noticed a boat approaching so I was keeping an eye on the manatees next to me. The water here is SUPER murky, so I wanted to make sure the captain could see where the group was so none of them accidentally got hit. But at that exact second, this manatee suddenly popped up from the depths RIGHT under me and we BOTH got spooked. Thankfully neither of us got hurt, and the boat safely passed without getting anywhere near the manatees. It’s a good reminder that when boating in areas with manatees, slowing down and staying alert can make a huge difference in protecting them🥹🩵 #crocodile #manatee #floridakeys #paddleboard #ocean

I was paddleboarding in the croc canal (there’s a resident croc in here)🐊 on a VERY murky day, and thought I had eyes on all the big potatoes. There were NONE in front of me, and suddenly, this one came up for a breath at this EXACT moment. He was not there until I pointed the camera that direction. I always have my eyes spinning in all directions even when I am recording to the side (you probably know why). I stayed still and calm, knowing if I put my paddle in to move away suddently, it would have scared him even more. Unfortunately, he didn’t see me when he came up, and there was NO way for me to see him as he did not appear until he was AT the surface. The reason my foot is in the water was because I needed to lean to that side to avoid completely flipping. Also, it did spray the canal water IN my mouth.🤢 I felt so bad for the potato, but the big potato completely ok, and I’m ok! We just spooked each other 😅 This is the first time this has ever happened to me in all my years paddleboarding, and I swear this exact one has been following me around in here the past few days trying to flip me again honestly 😂 (He unfortunately has a small boat strike on his back, so I can tell him apart from the others). We call him Flip now!🩵🥔 This was a day when there were SO many big potatoes in the canal and I was passing through to get to the ocean. I stayed completely still because if I had panicked and started paddling away, I could’ve scared him even more or fallen right into the canal… and who knows where the crocodile could be 😳🐊 The craziest part is this exact manatee has been following me around in here for days 😂 We can tell him apart because he unfortunately has a small boat strike scar on his back. We named him Flip. Right before this happened, a boat started heading straight toward the group in the murky water. I started pointing out where each manatee was so the captain could avoid hitting them. He slowed down and swerved around every single one thankfully. That’s why my paddleboard was a bit closer to the group than I usually get. It’s important to give animals space and respect. Boat strikes are one of the leading causes of death for manatees, especially in resting canals like this.
