“I think it’s a very appealing thing to be the victim because it relinquishes any accountability or responsibility.” This is how James Lawrence* (not his real name), a young man in his mid-20s living in the US – who fell down the so-called “red-pill pipeline” around the age of 17 – described what it was like to be there. A growing network of online communities known collectively as the “manosphere” is emerging as a serious threat to gender equality, as toxic digital spaces increasingly influence real-world attitudes, behaviours, and policies, the UN agency dedicated to ending gender discrimination has warned earlier this year. The phrase ‘red pill’ comes from a scene in the 1999 film The Matrix, in which Laurence Fishburne’s character offers Keanu Reeves a choice to take the “red pill” to see “how deep the rabbit hole goes”. The rabbit hole, in this case, includes the understanding that “men are the oppressed gender rather than women”, according to charity Hope Not Hate. Lawrence, who asked not to use his real name for privacy reasons, says he didn’t view it as a way to put women down, but more that women want someone “who is better than them per se – I cringe saying that – so you got to be more dominant yourself”. However, he now describes the manosphere as a “cult” which “makes you feel right, but at the cost of your mental health”. He says he remembers comment sections full of increasingly angry and isolated young men. After spending a year extracting himself from the “pipeline”, Lawrence spends time trying to dispel the lies and hatred spreading on online forums like Reddit. “If I can help others get out of this and avoid this, then I will have done my job,” he says. Three people died and three others reported ill after a suspected hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean, the World Health Organization and South Africa’s health department said on Sunday. The outbreak of the rare infection was reported on the MV Hondius, which was travelling between Argentina and Cape Verde. According to several online ship-tracking sites, the vessel was just off the port of Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, on Sunday night. The WHO said an investigation was under way but that at least one case of hantavirus had been confirmed. One of the patients was in intensive care in a South African hospital, the UN’s health agency told the Associated Press, and the WHO was working with authorities to evacuate two others with symptoms from the ship. Two of those who died were a husband and wife aged 70 and 69 from the Netherlands. The South African health ministry said the man fell ill onboard the ship and died on the island of Saint Helena, while his wife died at a hospital in Kempton Park, a city in South Africa. A British man, 69, who became ill on the ship was taken to a private health facility in Johannesburg, according to the South African health ministry, which said he tested positive for hantavirus. Israel’s military offensive has killed at least 61,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry, most of them civilians. The figure does not include the thousands believed to be buried under rubble or the thousands killed indirectly as a consequence of the war. However, cartooning remains a versatile and effective medium in order to try and capture the heated climate of our current times (both figuratively and literally); distilling the chaos into a single image and trying to squeeze out the odd laugh here and there where we can. Trump’s latest State of the Union address was a chaotic mix of applause, chanting, heckling and murder accusations. The president’s speech drew many cheers from Republican lawmakers, while Democrats made their opposition to the president clear. Congressman Al Green was ejected from the speech almost immediately after holding up a sign saying “Black people aren’t apes!“. Meanwhile, several Democratic lawmakers, including representative Ilhan Omar, heckled the president and accused him of murdering Americans in Minneapolis, while some left the address before it finished. Although Trump maintained a triumphant tone in his speech, saying that he had inherited a country ruined by Joe Biden and quickly rebuilt it, recent polls have shown that many voters disagree, with Trump underwater on his handling of key issues such as the economy and immigration. Although the official judiciary news agency has yet to publish the ruling, rights groups and lawyers who reviewed the documents said the pattern of arrests and legal cases against artists publicly defying the regime reflects a broader effort to deter cultural dissent.
