A surf camera on Bondi beach has captured people fleeing after a shooting Sunday evening. A father and son have been identified as the alleged shooters in a terrorist attack at Sydney’s Bondi beach, as authorities confirm the death toll from the massacre has risen to 16, including one child. The Australian prime minister, Anthony Albanese, said the shooting was “an act of pure evil, an act of antisemitism, an act of terrorism on our shores”. Vincent Kompany says José Mourinho made 'a huge mistake in leadership' in talking about Vinícius Júnior's celebration after he had reported alleged racist abuse. Vinícius told the referee that Gianluca Prestianni had racially abused him during Real Madrid's clash against Benfica, and after the match, Mourinho appeared to criticise Vinícius for his celebration – which he described as “stupid” – after scoring the only goal. 'I know he's a good person. I don't need to judge him as a person and I understand what he's done but he's made a mistake,' said Kompany. #realmadrid #football #championsleague

“I think it’s a very appealing thing to be the victim because it relinquishes any accountability or responsibility.” This is how James Lawrence* (not his real name), a young man in his mid-20s living in the US – who fell down the so-called “red-pill pipeline” around the age of 17 – described what it was like to be there. A growing network of online communities known collectively as the “manosphere” is emerging as a serious threat to gender equality, as toxic digital spaces increasingly influence real-world attitudes, behaviours, and policies, the UN agency dedicated to ending gender discrimination has warned earlier this year. The phrase ‘red pill’ comes from a scene in the 1999 film The Matrix, in which Laurence Fishburne’s character offers Keanu Reeves a choice to take the “red pill” to see “how deep the rabbit hole goes”. The rabbit hole, in this case, includes the understanding that “men are the oppressed gender rather than women”, according to charity Hope Not Hate. Lawrence, who asked not to use his real name for privacy reasons, says he didn’t view it as a way to put women down, but more that women want someone “who is better than them per se – I cringe saying that – so you got to be more dominant yourself”. However, he now describes the manosphere as a “cult” which “makes you feel right, but at the cost of your mental health”. He says he remembers comment sections full of increasingly angry and isolated young men. After spending a year extracting himself from the “pipeline”, Lawrence spends time trying to dispel the lies and hatred spreading on online forums like Reddit. “If I can help others get out of this and avoid this, then I will have done my job,” he says. Watch to find out more about his story, and what he thinks needs to change. For our new visual investigation into what makes the manosphere so appealing to teenage boys, head to the link in bio.

Families in La Guaira, Venezuela, blocked a truck carrying rescue equipment to another neighbourhood on Sunday, in a desperate attempt to divert it to find their loved ones. "I pulled my daughter halfway out. They’re not going to move from there," Wilker Molaya said. "I have nothing to lose – let them kill me if they want.” International response teams from the US, Mexico and elsewhere have joined Venezuelan authorities in the search, but as the critical 72-hour window for finding survivors has passed, anger and frustration is growing. Aftershocks and a lack of heavy machinery have been slowing searches in some of the hardest-hit areas, while communities continue to attempt to clear debris on their own. The death toll has risen to 1,450 people, and this number is expected to increase as tens of thousands are still missing. Three people died and three others reported ill after a suspected hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean, the World Health Organization and South Africa’s health department said on Sunday. The outbreak of the rare infection was reported on the MV Hondius, which was travelling between Argentina and Cape Verde. According to several online ship-tracking sites, the vessel was just off the port of Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, on Sunday night. The WHO said an investigation was under way but that at least one case of hantavirus had been confirmed. One of the patients was in intensive care in a South African hospital, the UN’s health agency told the Associated Press, and the WHO was working with authorities to evacuate two others with symptoms from the ship. Two of those who died were a husband and wife aged 70 and 69 from the Netherlands. The South African health ministry said the man fell ill onboard the ship and died on the island of Saint Helena, while his wife died at a hospital in Kempton Park, a city in South Africa. A British man, 69, who became ill on the ship was taken to a private health facility in Johannesburg, according to the South African health ministry, which said he tested positive for hantavirus. The Free Birth Society [FBS] is a US-headquartered business which promotes a radical version of freebirth, meaning giving birth without any medical assistance. Many women find FBS after searching online for birth options, and discovering its slick Instagram account, with 132,000 followers, and its hugely popular podcast, which has been downloaded 5m times. Led by ex-doula Emilee Saldaya, with support from her business partner, fellow ex-doula Yolande Norris-Clark, FBS promotes wild pregnancy, meaning pregnancy without any prenatal care, dismisses serious pregnancy and labour conditions as ‘variations of normal’, and suggests that resuscitating newborn babies can be a form of ‘sabotage’. Our reporting indicates that FBS has generated revenues in excess of $13m to date. A year-long investigation by Sirin Kale and Lucy Osborne identified 48 cases of baby deaths or serious harm involving mothers or birth attendants who appear to be linked to FBS. In 18 of these cases, evidence suggests that FBS played a significant role in decision-making that led to potentially avoidable tragedies.  You can listen to our six-episode podcast series The Birth Keepers on the Guardian app or by subscribing to the Guardian Investigates wherever you get your podcasts.

Donald and Melania Trump were evacuated from the White House correspondents’ dinner on Saturday evening after the event was interrupted by loud gunshots. A suspect was in custody, the FBI said, after the annual black tie dinner honoring the White House press corps was suddenly interrupted by confusion and chaos. Journalists ducked under tables as authorities rushed the president and members of his cabinet out of the room. The Secret Service said in a statement that the shooting incident occurred near the main magnetometer screening area at the hotel.

Witnesses have described what happened in the chamber when Christa Pike, who was convicted of murdering a schoolmate three decades ago, survived Tennessee's effort to execute her by means of lethal injection, the state's first attempt to put a woman to death in two centuries. A health reporter for the local news station WPLM said the state's protocol did not appear to address what should happen if an inmate remained alive after receiving a second dose of the injection. Pike's condition after the ordeal was not immediately known. It was not clear after she was taken for medical treatment from the Riverbend maximum security institution in Nashville what legal avenues her lawyers or the state might pursue next. Guardian cartoonist Ben Jennings says 2025 felt a bit like watching repeats of old news broadcasts whilst strapped to a dentist’s chair having all of one’s teeth removed. “From the unimaginable horrors in Gaza to the continued bloodshed in Ukraine; the dreadful Donald Trump sequel and Nigel Farage’s ascent, everything felt painfully familiar - just worse. “As a cartoonist, the trickiest thing was to keep finding something new to say. However, cartooning remains a versatile and effective medium in order to try and capture the heated climate of our current times (both figuratively and literally); distilling the chaos into a single image and trying to squeeze out the odd laugh here and there where we can. By god, we need it!” Swipe through to see a selection of Jennings’s cartoons this year.

You can “do things the easy way … or the hard way” was Donald Trump’s warning to Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro, this week amid growing tensions between Washington and Caracas. For weeks, the US has used the “war on drugs” to justify its escalating military presence – its largest in the Caribbean since the 1989 invasion of Panama. Officials in Washington have said a “new phase” in the administration's pressure campaign against Maduro was about to begin. And Venezuela’s authoritarian leader responded by urging followers to prepare to defend “every inch” of the South American country. This is the latest stage in an intensifying campaign that has been going on for months. It has included strikes on fast boats in the Caribbean, which has resulted in 83 deaths that the UN has called extrajudicial executions, and Maduro being accused of running the “Cartel of the Suns” drug-trafficking organisation, which the US designated a terrorist group this week. But the Guardian Latin America correspondent, Tom Phillips, says that while Trump’s administration has largely used the “war on drugs” to justify its presence in the region, the evidence does not quite support this. Watch the video to find out more about why the US’s claims don’t appear to add up – and learn more in our visual guide via the link in bio.

‘This is not normal. It’s not normal to our psyche to see this level of violence and to assume that we will just be okay with what is happening,' said Edwin Torres DeSantiago, who manages the ICE monitoring group Immigrant Defense Network. Torres DeSantiago was at the scene of the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during a large-scale immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis yesterday – a killing that has sparked protests and vigils across the US. The shooting marked a dramatic escalation of the latest in a series of immigration enforcement operations in major cities under the Trump administration. More protests are planned, with protesters demanding that the officer who shot Good be prosecuted and for ICE agents to leave their cities. Wednesday’s killing was at least the fifth death linked to the crackdowns, AP reported. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has doubled down on his claim that the ICE agent acted in self-defence when shooting Good. However, reporters in the room said the video they president played did not appear to show Good running over the ICE agent. When Good was shot and killed in Minneapolis, the Guardian was shadowing observers nearby who have trained for months to monitor and respond to ICE activity in the state. Sturla Holm Lægreid broke down in tears after winning bronze in the men’s 20km biathlon, apologising for having an affair and saying: “It has been the worst week of my life.” Lægreid stunned viewers when he opened up about his private life after winning a medal at the Winter Olympics. “There is something I want to share with someone who may not be watching today,” he said. “Half a year ago I met the love of my life. The world’s most beautiful and nicest person. “Three months ago I made the mistake of my life and cheated on her, and I told her about that a week ago. This has been the worst week of my life. “I had the gold medal in life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her. Sport has come second these last few days. Yes, I wish I could share this with her. “I want to be a good role model but I have to admit when I get something wrong. You have to admit when you do something you can’t stand for and hurt someone you love so much. “I do not want to say who it is. She has had enough to deal with after last week but I hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel for us both. And that she can continue to love me.”

Trump’s latest State of the Union address was a chaotic mix of applause, chanting, heckling and murder accusations. The president’s speech drew many cheers from Republican lawmakers, while Democrats made their opposition to the president clear. Congressman Al Green was ejected from the speech almost immediately after holding up a sign saying “Black people aren’t apes!“. Meanwhile, several Democratic lawmakers, including representative Ilhan Omar, heckled the president and accused him of murdering Americans in Minneapolis, while some left the address before it finished. Although Trump maintained a triumphant tone in his speech, saying that he had inherited a country ruined by Joe Biden and quickly rebuilt it, recent polls have shown that many voters disagree, with Trump underwater on his handling of key issues such as the economy and immigration. The president sought to link himself to more recent successes, at one point bringing out the US men’s hockey team that just won gold at the Winter Olympics. Several Democrats opted to skip the event, with some announcing plans to take part in counter-programming held elsewhere, including a “People’s State of the Union” organized by liberal groups. Read about why the Guardian’s Washington bureau chief David Smith believes the longest ever State of the Union address by Trump was the also the most inconsequential by heading to the link in bio.

The Iranian singer Parastoo Ahmadi and eight members of a production team, including musicians, have been reportedly sentenced to 74 lashes for performing in a concert livestreamed on Ahmadi’s YouTube channel in 2024. According to court documents, the criminal court of Qom province sentenced the artists to flogging, a two-year ban on leaving the country and a two-year ban on engaging in artistic activities on charges that include offending public decency through the production and publication of “vulgar and immoral content” online. Although the official judiciary news agency has yet to publish the ruling, rights groups and lawyers who reviewed the documents said the pattern of arrests and legal cases against artists publicly defying the regime reflects a broader effort to deter cultural dissent. In December 2024, the 29-year-old singer performed the patriotic song Az Khoone Javanane Vatan (From the Blood of the Youth of the Homeland) without a hijab in a livestreamed performance that went viral. She was briefly detained along with several musicians shortly after its release before being freed. Authorities later filed a formal case over the publication of the video, which has since accumulated millions of views on YouTube. Bahar Ghandehari, the director of advocacy at the US-based Center for Human Rights in Iran, said: “Ahmadi’s punishment of 74 lashes for merely singing and appearing without a hijab is yet another reminder that human rights conditions in Iran have not changed, despite the Iranian authorities’ wartime propaganda campaign aimed at improving their image.” Tap the link in bio to read the full story.

Iran has launched a barrage of retaliatory missiles aimed at Israel and US bases across the region, denouncing the two countries’ airstrikes as a breach of the UN charter and an act of flagrant aggression designed to end any possibility of a diplomatic resolution. On Saturday morning, Israel and the US launched a war on Iran, with Donald Trump declaring the start of “major combat operations” and calling on Iranians to rise up against their government. Within hours, the conflict consumed much of the Middle East. Iran launched successive waves of ballistic missiles at Israel, with few landing in the country. People in Damascus, south Lebanon and Amman were shaken by explosions above their heads as Israel intercepted incoming Iranian missiles in the sky. Iran also targeted US military bases in Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, and Bahrain, as well as conducted a strike in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Gulf states reacted with outrage, condemning the attacks and saying that they reserved the right to respond. Video posted to social media showed the moment an Iranian missile struck the US Navy base, and another video showed a thick grey plume of smoke rising from near the small island state's coastline as sirens wailed. Bahrain said the service centre of the U.S. Fifth Fleet had been subjected to a missile attack. The New York City mayor, Zohran Mamdani, said he would encourage King Charles III to return the Koh‑i‑Noor diamond if they were to speak privately during the monarch’s visit to the city. The 106-carat stone, which sits in the crown previously worn by the queen mother, has been the subject of an ownership dispute since it came into the possession of Queen Victoria in 1849. Critics say the diamond, which is the size of a hen’s egg, was immorally taken from Duleep Singh, a 10-year-old maharajah whose kingdom was seized by the British. Mamdani’s team distanced themselves from the king soon after it was announced Charles would attend a 9/11 ceremony at the World Trade Center. “The mayor will not meet privately with King Charles. But the mayor will be at the wreath laying ceremony today,” Joe Calvello, the mayor’s press secretary, said on Wednesday morning. And as the day of the wreath-laying unfolded it seemed he may have got lucky by avoiding a private audience. At the World Trade Center, Charles and Queen Camilla were accompanied by Mike Bloomberg, who was the mayor of New York from 2002-13, rather than Mamdani, as they toured the memorial pools and laid a wreath. In spite of Mamdani's remark about the diamond, when he and Charles did meet it appeared to be on friendly terms, with the pair shaking hands and smiling during a short conversation. Buckingham Palace declined to comment on whether the diamond would be returned. To read our full coverage, head to the link in bio.

Next week, the moon will pass in front of the sun, completely obscuring it in a solar eclipse. According to Nasa, parts of Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and Portugal will experience a total solar eclipse. In the UK, there will be a partial eclipse, with up to 96% of the sun covered, the deepest eclipse the country has seen since 1999. But no matter where you’re hoping to watch from, it’s important to protect your eyes. The Guardian’s Sarah Ann Harris explains.
