In Oklahoma City in 2022, a loose cow wandered onto I-40 near Penn Ave, causing traffic chaos. Officers couldn't contain it, so they called local cowboys who lassoed and wrangled it safely off the highway. Via: KOCO 5 helicopter footage.

This morning, President Trump announced action against the four companies that dominate American beef processing and signaled he wants to give ranchers more freedom to process their own product. Two of those four processors are controlled by foreign corporations. More competition in processing is a step in the right direction, and we support it. But if the goal is actually to lower prices for American families, the most direct path is mandatory country of origin labeling. Without it, imported beef enters our supply chain, sits beside American beef in your grocery store, gets blended into ground beef, and is sold without any obligation to tell you where it came from. There is nothing requiring the savings from cheaper imported beef to be passed along to you. Give consumers transparency and let them choose. That is how a free market is supposed to work. Competition only functions when people know what they are choosing between. We can support a president when he gets it right and respectfully challenge him when we believe he gets it wrong. That is not political. That is the job. Break the processing bottleneck. Bring back mandatory country of origin labeling. Give every American, Republican, Democrat, independent, or libertarian, the right to know where their food comes from.

Back in June, Ben stood in front of a room full of American ranchers at the R-CALF USA National Convention and talked about why mandatory country of origin labeling matters and why the average consumer has no idea they're buying imported beef. Two months later, the federal government approved 300,000 metric tons of foreign ground beef into the US in 90 days, tariff-free. American ranchers who have spent years fighting through drought and rising costs are finally in a position to rebuild their herds. This is the exact wrong moment to flood the market with below-market foreign beef and ask them to compete with it. And most consumers buying that beef won't know where it came from, because MCOOL was repealed in 2015. It's time to start paying attention to what's on your label. If it doesn't tell you where your beef came from, ask why.

When we committed to selling only 100% American meat, we thought we were doing something simple: helping you feel better about what you were feeding your family. We didn’t anticipate the chaos it would cause: shifting your kitchen routines, heightening dinner-party expectations, and even changing the way you grocery shop. We’re sorry that grocery-store meat became impossible to enjoy after trying Good Ranchers. We’re sorry you no longer have leftovers because everyone insists on seconds. And we’re especially sorry for the stress of navigating an entire table full of compliments from your dinner guests. None of this was our intention. Our goal was simply to reconnect you with real American producers so you could feel confident about what you were feeding your family. We didn’t anticipate how quickly you’d taste the difference, or how hard it would be for anything else to compare. Please accept our deepest apologies for raising your standards, forever. Sincerely, Good Ranchers
