Everyone assumes we adapt to screens with practice. The reading research says the opposite has happened. A meta-analysis in Educational Research Review pooled 54 studies covering 171,055 people, comparing how well the same material was understood on paper versus on a screen. Paper won, which by now is not surprising. What should be surprising is what the authors found when they sorted the studies by publication year: the paper advantage GREW over time rather than shrinking! It was worse under time pressure, and it showed up for informational and expository text while disappearing for narrative. Stories survive the screen. Twenge's 2026 analysis of PISA scores across 36 countries found that after 2012, math, reading and science scores fell, and they fell hardest in the countries where students spent the most leisure time on devices during the school day. Loneliness at school climbed on the same map, steeply in the high-device countries and hardly at all in the low-device ones. But the mechanism underneath all of it is neuroplasticity, and neuroplasticity has no memory of what it did last year. It gives you back whatever you keep asking it for. Everyone assumes we adapt to screens with practice. The reading research says the opposite has happened. A meta-analysis in Educational Research Review pooled 54 studies covering 171,055 people, comparing how well the same material was understood on paper versus on a screen. Paper won, which by now is not surprising. What should be surprising is what the authors found when they sorted the studies by publication year: the paper advantage GREW over time rather than shrinking! Their case: artificial turf, rubber matting, and sealed surfaces have turned playgrounds into microbial deserts, right at the age when a child's immune system is trying to learn what to fight. A few years earlier, they ran the whole thing again as a placebo-controlled, double-blinded trial, but this time with sandboxes! One group got playground sand enriched with microbially diverse soil. The other group got sand that looked exactly the same, but was microbially poor. Nobody, not the kids, not the staff, knew which was which. The living-sand kids shifted their skin bacteria and their immune markers moved toward regulation. The placebo kids didn't. A placebo-controlled trial. On dirt. I love these people. All studies linked in the comments! My real science take is that these are small trials and the biomarkers are being tested over weeks. Nobody has shown that a forest floor at daycare prevents an actual disease diagnosis twenty years later. Still, think about what we actually did here. We spent forty years making childhood cleaner, smoother, and more indoors, and the immune-mediated conditions went UP. I had a doctor once explain to me that a kid's immune system is like a security guard who has never met anybody. If you don't give it faces and people to learn, it can start taking shots at pollen, at peanuts, at the kid's own tissue. If you are lucky enough to have a yard, remember it's free. Pilots ran this experiment for us forty years ago and we should have been taking notes. The FAA estimates commercial pilots are on automation for about 90% of flight time. A 2016 DOT inspector general report went through what that costs. It cites a study where experienced airline pilots scored BELOW FAA standards on basic manual flying maneuvers. Most of those pilots claimed they hand-flew regularly. They rated their own manual skills higher than their actual performance. Back in 1983 a researcher named Lisanne Bainbridge wrote the paper on this, "Ironies of Automation," and in it she said, the human is asked to sit and monitor for hours, then take over the second the machine fails. That is the moment demanding the most skill, handed to the person with the least recent practice. One correction to what I said on camera: I said we are seeing physical changes in the brain from AI use. Let me be more clear on what I mean: The now famous MIT Media Lab study that put EEG caps on 54 people writing essays found weaker, less distributed brain connectivity in the ChatGPT group, plus most of them could not quote the essay they had just finished. That is brain ACTIVITY over a few weeks. Studies on structural changes have not been published, and I should not have said physical. Now back to pilots, I am lucky to have 2 pilots in the family and the fix for this is simple. ACTUALLY FLY. ON PURPOSE. While the autopilot is sitting right there working fine.
