The Blue Jays jump from worst to first wasn’t luck or coincidence — it was the product of a clear philosophy led by first-year hitting coach David Popkins. Popkins brought in a modern model for team offense: emphasizing bat speed, measured intent, and giving hitters the freedom to compete and own their process. Gaining nearly 1 mph of average bat speed in a single season is impressive enough — but doing it with an aging roster, and seeing that number continue to rise deep into August and reach 72.2 mph in September? “That doesn’t happen without a real, deliberate change in process.”

We taught this first round pick a new pitch in under 30 seconds. Kyson’s fastball is already special, sitting in the mid-90s and touching 99 with the cut-ride profile we see dominate the game today. He also owns a big knuckle curve that generates whiffs. But what he was missing was a true glove-side weapon to complement that fastball. When Kyson worked through his arsenal, his slider stood out — not because it was bad, but because the grip wasn’t allowing him to access the movement it should have. By adding a spike and adjusting seam orientation, we helped him unlock a sweeper with major horizontal separation — a swing-and-miss option against righties and a back-foot weapon to lefties.
